For WIFW A/W 2011, designer Ritu Kumar presents ‘Label’, a deep and vibrant collection taking its inspiration from a bygone romance of silk route explorers in the early 19th century.

The entire collection revolves around the adventure and mystery immortalized in characters that traveled the land looking for fortune. The textiles and traditions have been contemporized in shape and technique to offer a modern interpretation of the theme.

Fabrics developed for the collection include several jacquards in both traditional and fresh designs. These include wool, silk blends and jersey. The collection showcases some one-of-a-kind pieces that are the beginning of a revival project in Kanjivaram. Other noticeable textiles include hand woven silks from Bengal.

The shapes also draw from the era with touches of masculine trimmings and structure. Accompanying these are wispy feminine shapes with a touch of vintage glamour. The styling is a patchwork of ideas, textures and colors. The hues tend toward blacks, burgundy’s, rusts and khaki browns.
