The inspiration for this year’s biggest night in fashion and Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is designer Rei Kawakubo, the mastermind behind the clothing line Commes des Garçons.

The exhibition, titled Art of the In-Between, will open on 4 May and sets out to show Kawakubo’s “ability to challenge conventional notions of beauty, good taste, and fashionability”.

For exhibition curator Andrew Bolton, “Rei has influenced a whole generation, not only of designers but also artists and architects through her practice”. The exhibition of her work is the Met’s first exhibition of a living fashion designer for more than 30 years.
