A new exhibition has opened its door at Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais, celebrating the 120th birth anniversary of Cristóbal Balenciaga, who founded the Balenciaga fashion house in Spain in 1937. Titled as “Balenciaga, Master of Lace the exhibition is showcasing some stunning creations from Balenciaga’s collections from April 18th to Aug. 31st 2015.

1Curated by Catherine Join-Diéterle, the exhibition has 75 items which consist of creations from the museum’s own 18-piece Balenciaga collection in Calais, France, vintage Balenciaga from the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum in Getaria, Spain and rented designs from Paris’s Museum of Decorative Arts, Palais Galliera and Maison Lesage. Many of the designs are never seen before.

Other Balenciaga’s masterpieces like a black lace and sculpted skirts, inspired by portraits by the artist Goya are on display. For a closer look at his manipulation of the material, there are also sketches and photographs from the atelier on view.
