Savio Jon is a person who sees things differently. His clothes are constantly pushing the margins of fashion to create something unlike. To this Goa-based fashion designer, clothes are not just clothes. They are a coming together of colour, texture and one odd detail. His lack of formal training has helped Savio break the rules of fashion with more ease, giving room to further experimentation without compromising on technique. In his style, shapes are manipulated, patterns are deconstructed and colours defy a natural palette. In a world of offensive glamour Savio has managed to find laid back elegance.

Rejected by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Savio took hands-on approach and apprenticed with asymmetricalist Wendell Rodricks while freelancing for various export houses.

  • In 1993, he won at the first Shopper’s Stop Designer of the Year Award

  • In 1999, the Taj Exotica, Goa commissioned him to design their entire uniform.

  • In 2001, debuted at LIFW with his London high street grunge theme collection

Jon reminisces about 60s and 70s when fashion was connected with lifestyle and people were much trendier.  The designer in him finds inspiration in music, travel and culture. In this business minded world, Savio is one person who hasn’t let commerce dampen his passion for art. His permanent focus is to have fun and not just to make money. This attitude reflects in his arty designs. Being an absolute control freak, he still cuts every piece from his collection and likes to blend street with avant-garde making the clothes unbearably wearable. Better known for his wild fashion sensibility he believes in quality not quantity and his focus is on craftsmanship and detail.

"I think I’m a misfit in India for sure."

He considers the Indian fashion scene to be pompous and pretentious. "Its Imporatnat for the industry to look deep within. We need to be more easy going.”

Savio Jon currently retails at Bombay Electric, Ensemble, Muse and Joya in Mumbai; Grasshopper and Cinnamon in Bangalore; and Evoluzione in Chennai.
