With Indian women becoming more fashion conscious, high-end fashion goes affordable with the launch of Zara’a first store in Delhi. Zara is the flagship chain store of Inditex Group owned by Spanish tycoon Amancio Ortega.

During the 1980s, Ortega started changing the design, manufacturing and distribution process to reduce lead times and react to new trends in a quicker way, in what he called "instant fashions". All models are great-looking. A big number does international projects. There’s a decent percentage in the modelling industry that has emerged from small towns or even villages. You have seen a lot of them on the cover of prestigious magazines and almost each has a story of struggle. So, how is model Inder Bajwa different?  Well, it is his heart with a beautiful vision that helps him stand out. Consider this, “ I want to have a children’s organisation for education. This organisation will be a special one because it won’t restrict knowledge to books.” We caught up with him and found out this, along with something more. You read on to discover what we got.

Family and Academics…
I was born and brought up in Bajwa kalan, a village in Punjab. My family including my mother,  father, brother and sister, all live there. Even I did my schooling there.

Parent’s reaction to your choice of modelling as a career…
I always wanted to do something unstable but interesting. I wished for something that allowed me to travel, meet new people and not a 8 hour job. I like the risk factor in life as it makes life interesting. That is why I chose modelling as a career. And parents are very proud of me.

First modelling assignment…
My first assignment was a print shoot for Star Cruise Libra. I did it in 2006.

Greatest achievement till date…
I take care of my family and just got my sister married sometime back . To me, this is my greatest achievement in life.

Idea of an ideal date…
I would prefer sitting bare feet on a beach with my love. More precisely, it would be like having candle-light dinner with wine.

When not modelling, what are you most likely to be found doing…
You will find me watching movies or reading some book.

Essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…
Well, a model needs fire, right attitude, great height, looks and the perfect walk.

Views on Indian vs. Western models…
I don’t find much difference between the two. Internationally, a good model has no nationality. He just has to be good. But here in India, you are an international model if all you have is a non-Indian passport.

Most touching moment of your life…
My sister has just got married. When she was leaving the house, I felt so moved.

Quick snippets

FAVOURITE FOOD: Indian.

FAVOURITE PERFUME: Escada.

FAVOURITE LINGERIE BRAND: CK.

FAVOURITE DESIGNER: Rohit Bal and Sabya Sachi.

YOUR GREATEST FEAR: My anger. I loose my temper when people ill-treat waiters and autowallas.

Fashion’s newest force of young designers showcased their senior collections at the annual, School of Fashion, Academy of Art University show in San Francisco. The garments and sculptural jewelry are one-of-a-kind. Here’s my wish list from the show –

A simple, feminine dress paired with a lattice necklace of creepy, clawed creatures from land and sea. Kaori’s necklace reminded me of lazy days watching hermit crabs on the beaches of Lakshadweep.

Goat hair jacket + latex dress with lacey prints + knit dress with little sparkling crystals = must haves for evenings out.

Rinat is off to Paris to further her studies in fashion design at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne*

Stephanie will be in NY this summer for an internship with Diane von Fürstenberg.

When in the mood to button-up, these collections offer detailing that is prim, proper, tailored, and perfectly patterned.

Young was selected for an internship with the innovative retailers, Opening Ceremony.

Ivy is also off to NY for an internship with Diane von Fürstenberg.

Inspired by India’s Ganges River, this balanced blend of ‘east meets west’ is a traveler’s delight.

Ghazaleh will be joining her colleagues in NY at Diane von Fürstenberg for an internship this summer. In 2008 she won the $25,000 CFDA Grand Prize Geoffrey Beene Design Scholarship. In 2009 Ghazaleh was awarded the French Scholarship Exchange and studied for a year at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne*; while in Paris, her savvy style was captured on several occasions by photographer Scott Schuman (TheSartorialist.com).

* L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne also happens to be the alma mater of one of my favorite fashion designers (and one of Pollyana’s favorites too), who lives and works between India, Milan and Paris – Sanchita Ajjampur.

Edith Barker & Pollyana Patel quickly became friends after meeting in Bangalore, India. Edith has a dual career in psychotherapy and fashion public relations; Pollyana is an image consultant, model, and the brand ambassador for Ritu & Rochana. They currently have two projects in development under Barker & Patel, and have agreed to join the FashionFad team to share their travels, experiences and musings.

Fashion, designs, designers, garments, all following a linear way and here’s someone en route to trace the untraversed parabolic path. Lecoanet Hemant, the design label of designer duo Hemant Sagar and his French partner Didier Lecoanet came to India in 2001 and set up their headquarters in Delhi. They had formed their label in late seventies and for over two decades were a part of the haute couture establishment in Paris. The well panned out journey of their brand transits into a new realm as they have recently decided to draw a full stop to their showcasing at the fashion weeks in India.

Little curios, a little apprehensive we headed to their firm to meet Hemant Sagar and to find out the real story behind this stride. And what we discover is a much more intense thought provoking visionary and a full proof working model of an alternate reality. As we entered the premises of his eco friendly huge firm we had already realized that there is lot more than just garments to this design label.

A warm host brimming with enthusiasm Hemant Sagar discussed with us his future plans of building his label into a brand, to sketch a much larger than life image and there is no physical person attached to the attributes and enormity of his label. It’s an entity in itself and not a mere piece of cloth but a high fashion luxurious culture. He not only believes fashion is about individuality; it’s about being you and is of course luxury.

The modus operandi at ‘Lecoanet Hemant’ ( I should specify clearly here I am talking about the brand and not the individual designers) works in LH corporate which takes care of uniforms of around 35 hotels all across India and LH factory which caters to international high fashion brands like Balmain, Cerruti and more besides their own  fashion label. They have also launched their first product Ayurgyanic, a clothes line developed from natural herbal oils for the well being and immunity boosting, a hundred percent ethical product.

The patterns have been set right, Lecoanet Hemant proposes to barrage with a total of 10 retail stores in a year’s time and has already geared for the same. His product line is on an expansion spree and the Lecoanet Hemant label is already designed and geared into a self sufficient module with in-house innovation, design and production of bags, garments, leather products, metal hardware and still more to come over. He is also actively looking up for tie-ups with manufactures to launch his brand’s jewellery line.

Celebrating the start of its second glorious decade, the International Indian Film Academy is set to write its grandest chapter yet. The IIFA Weekend to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from June 3rd – 5th, 2010 is slated to be a spectacular show with India’s biggest cinema stars in action.

June 3rd will see the trend-setting IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza which will be a trail blazer event in Colombo, with Indian and Sri Lankan fashion designers showcasing their collections. The Fashion Extravaganza will be spread over two days and is of special significance as it supports the IIFA Foundation. The Foundation is a charity organization that was set up by the IIFA Academy to support families of the film industry workers who have been adversely affected during the production of films.

This year, ‘IIFA Fashion Rocks’ will feature Indian designers Manish Malhotra and Vikram Phadnis and leading Sri Lankan designers Yoland and Kanchana (KT Brown). The Manish Malhotra collection is inspired from textures of the Mughal period influenced by the British Raj, albeit they will retain a contemporary perspective. While the collection by Vikram Phadnis, specially created for the IIFA Fashion Extravaganza, will have an influence of costumes and styles inspired by Indian films through the years. Sri Lankan designer Yoland’s collection will feature pieces depicting the Sri Lankan traditional mask and floral designs inspired from the country.

The second night of the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza – IIFA Bling will feature celebrity showcases by designers, Rocky S and Nandita Mahtani. The collection by Rocky S includes classy suits with a twist, creating an old English school feel. Nandita Mahtani’s line will consist of evening wear, appealing to women of all ages.
