His clothes are constantly pushing the margins of fashion to create…

It’s stylish, the Nine West collection is for the lack of a better word, gorgeous. It’s divided in 5 categories. So whichever mood you are in or whichever style you follow, there’s a perfect category for you. The ultimate jump start into Spring/Summer ’10.

The story of Nine West begins with the genuine and resourceful eyes of a true fashionista, attributing its inspiration from couture designs to art Nine West continues to elevate its branded Footwear and Hand bags collection. Also focusing in this collection is the New Casual Look & Dusty Tones catering to easy feminine sensibilities.

The line metamorphosis is homage to the 80’s Fashion with its distinctive geometrical accents and hammered finishes. Fresh Start is all about Chic and feminine florals and beads. Enjoy the mixture of chains, vibrant splashes of colours, and metallic details in every shades with In The Bizzare. Neutrally calm follows toned down and minimalism as its forte, in muted colours and soft metallics.  And the Nine West Vintage American Collection features bold pop of colours, metals and flowers.

Savio Jon is a person who sees things differently. His clothes are constantly pushing the margins of fashion to create something unlike. To this Goa-based fashion designer, clothes are not just clothes. They are a coming together of colour, texture and one odd detail. His lack of formal training has helped Savio break the rules of fashion with more ease, giving room to further experimentation without compromising on technique. In his style, shapes are manipulated, patterns are deconstructed and colours defy a natural palette. In a world of offensive glamour Savio has managed to find laid back elegance.

Rejected by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Savio took hands-on approach and apprenticed with asymmetricalist Wendell Rodricks while freelancing for various export houses.

  • In 1993, he won at the first Shopper’s Stop Designer of the Year Award

  • In 1999, the Taj Exotica, Goa commissioned him to design their entire uniform.

  • In 2001, debuted at LIFW with his London high street grunge theme collection

Jon reminisces about 60s and 70s when fashion was connected with lifestyle and people were much trendier.  The designer in him finds inspiration in music, travel and culture. In this business minded world, Savio is one person who hasn’t let commerce dampen his passion for art. His permanent focus is to have fun and not just to make money. This attitude reflects in his arty designs. Being an absolute control freak, he still cuts every piece from his collection and likes to blend street with avant-garde making the clothes unbearably wearable. Better known for his wild fashion sensibility he believes in quality not quantity and his focus is on craftsmanship and detail.

"I think I’m a misfit in India for sure."

He considers the Indian fashion scene to be pompous and pretentious. "Its Imporatnat for the industry to look deep within. We need to be more easy going.”

Savio Jon currently retails at Bombay Electric, Ensemble, Muse and Joya in Mumbai; Grasshopper and Cinnamon in Bangalore; and Evoluzione in Chennai.

Here comes the new breed of the modeling industry waiting to be unleashed at new and dizzying heights of success. She walked into the fashion scene a mere one and a half year ago but has added some valuable names to her resume already. She is a down to earth young college girl for whom modeling had not been a sole aim but rather a lucky coincidence.

Raashi is a student following her English honors from Lady Sriram College. An extremely hard worker, she truly believes in the saying that we are made to persist and that’s how we know who we are. An optimist, she considers that life is like a river and the twists and the turns are to guide us and not stop deter us from achieving our goals.

Some of her works that would surely make you take notice of this beautiful female include a commercial for Dove. Print shoots for Parashute, Tanishq, Images Bazaar, Catch and Oxyglow.  She was also featured on the cover of the July 2009 edition of Femina. Family and Academics…
We are a small happy family consisting of my parents, my elder brother and me. Whatever I am today is because of the family values that I have imbibed. I owe all my success to my hard work and my family’s support and blessings. I have recently shifted to Palam Vihar in Gurgaon from Delhi. I did my schooling from St. Marks, Meera Bagh, New Delhi.

Parent’s reaction to your choice of modeling as a career…
They are my biggest support and supported me completely when I chose this career. Modeling happened by chance. I had never really thought of entering it. But I am glad I did. This has been a really exciting journey as I get to meet so many interesting people and learn a lot too.

First modeling assignment…
I was on the Femina cover page of the July 2009 edition.

Greatest achievement till date…
Well, there have been many achievements; it’s tough to name one. I think it was when I received three trophies in my XII standard and topped my stream. It’s a great feeling to make my parents proud.

Idea of an ideal date

Well, my idea of an ideal date would be sitting near a splashing beach and having a candle lit dinner, with a piano playing in the background.

When not modeling what are you most likely to be found doing…
Well I’m an avid reader and in my free time I will definitely be found reading books.

Essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…

  • Hard work
  • Dedication
  • Perseverance
  • Good communication skills
  • A healthy body

Any small snippet about the industry…
It’s a nice industry if you are with the right people. And I am extremely glad to be associated with elite.

Designers chosen from Lakme Fashion Week – Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Nikasha Tawadey and Anand Kabra opened Shanghai Fashion Week’s ‘Asian Fashion Blooming’ (AFB), a special event for World Expo Shanghai 2010 of Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival organized by Shanghai International Fashion Centre.

The trio – Sabyasachi, Nikasha and Anand brought alive an eclectic fusion of the east and the west, playing with colours and inimitable styling in their collection. The opening show, organized with great detailing, was a huge hit and appreciated by the Chinese audience. The large scale event witnessed a bevy of audience that ranged from the Shanghai fashion fraternity, government officials and local media besides talent.

Anand Kabra known for his free spirit, unconfined by predictable style statements for the quintessential global woman brought alive the narrative of Draupadi in ‘The Palace of Illusions’. The collection ‘She Was So Dark That She Was Blue’ drew parallels between the River Krishna and Draupadi, also known as Krishna. It finds irony like the depths of darkness that lie turbulent beneath quiet waters their shadow selves brought them glory after much destruction.

Sabyasachi had a collection that traveled through eclectic roads that join nomadic Africa with subversive Paris of the 1920’s. Bohemian 70’s rockstar influence merged seamlessly with folk textiles and grunge to make the collection modern, yet vintage. One of Sabyasachi’s collection piece themed as “Impression of Shanghai” was a special gift from Sabyasachi to Shanghai Fashion Week (SFW) on behalf of LFW and India. This gift was showcased on ramp at the closing award ceremony, and now is part of a permanent exhibition at SIFC commemorating India’s participation in the event.

Nikasha Tawadey, a delightful combination of ethnic and contemporary, took inspiration from Siuli, an exotic perfumed flower. According to mythology, this heavenly tree was brought to earth by Lord Krishna. Her collection was an almost white and crème coupled with yellows, turmeric and rusty reds into coral. The fabrics are of traditional Indian weaves like woven benarasi silks, chanderi, mul mul, silk chiffon and georgette, making the collection a perfect stylish balance between wearability and beauty.

Representing LFW at the event, Sujal Shah, Head of Fashion – IMG India says “Participating in ‘Asian Fashion Blooming’ helped to open communications between the Indian and Chinese fashion representative and allowed us greater insight into the Chinese fashion trade market. The India mega show and designers received a phenomenal response. This was another step forward in our effort to integrate India into global fashion. The collaboration also helped in connecting with the Chinese fashion media and other Asian counterparts that will eventually build deeper associations and business in the long run.”

Ingrid Yin, Executive Director of Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival & Shanghai Fashion Week Organizing Committee adds, "Indian Fashion is full of Asian style but unique and special! In international perspective, Indian designers are always dedicated to innovation and creation, that’s why they have become an integral part on the global fashion stage."
