Labels Don’t Pay ModelsThe bad name fashion industry has earned over the years, apart from excessive glamorization drug abuse and low-brow high-brow things, comes somehow from unfairly paid models, interns and freelancers.

The unfair labor standards and rights which sometimes make designers (Marc Jacobs in this case) pay in form of clothing rather than money might be a thing of past as Model Alliance has collaborated with Freelancer’s Union to pass ‘The Freelancer Payment Protection Act’, a proposed law which would make models and freelancers in New York from deadbeat clients.

Labels Don’t Pay Models

It would Though the law has already passed in the New York State Assembly but is still under review in the senate. To ensure it gets reviewed the collaboration put forth few examples of wage theft with the models while underlining the fact that the lack of financial transparency and accountability is a significant problem in the business of fashion. One such example is of top model Caitriona Balfe, who waited as long as a year to receive payment for her work, and staggeringly lost over $300,000 in unpaid earnings when her agency declared bankruptcy.

The late American Copper heiress and philanthropist, Huguette M. Clark, who lived most of her life in reclusion is a mystery to the world. Though it’s the time of gravity defying heels but back in 1970s it was the platform heels which strutted down the wardrobes of fashionistas, along with eye brows raised about the same old form versus function debate.

The revelation about 70s fashion at its sadist best comes through an account of a documentary sizing up the perils of platform heels yet the penchants and reasons galore to love them. The documentary shows a medical expert warning about the bent position of knees which occurs due to wearing high heels, and consequently, strained, swollen knees and arthritis which could eventually result in surgery.

In 1999 the British Standards Institution (BSI) gave a health warning against platform heels after a Japanese woman died after falling off her shoes and fracturing her skull. But unaffectedly, women find them irresistible stating reasons varying from novelty (which a platform heel was back in 70s) to functionality (makes one look taller) to mere charm of such shoes.

The irreverent humour and use of vibrant colors popping out in the pictures come from the work of famed Spanish Filmmaker Pedro Almodovar whereas the bouffant hairstyle, the main attraction of shoot is inspired from movie Hairspray.
