In Aditya Dugar’s collection for upcoming WIFW A/W 2011, the classic brilliantly meets with contemporary. Drawing his inspiration from the Art Nouveau period of art, the designs and patterns break the monotony into highly stylized, flowing curvilinear forms, characterized by organic, floral and plant-inspired motifs.

The collection encompasses exquisite attires crafted with traditional tailoring and contemporary finesse. The color palette ranges from the soft pastels to a riotous mix of hues. Dainty detailing such as nipped waists, botanical prints, and surfaces treated with novel techniques and feminine lustrous fabrics add character to the urban, chic silhouettes.

Sanskar by Sonam Dubal presents ‘Hidden Voices, Ancient Sounds’, a tribute to the languages eroded with time for WIFW A/W 2011. The collection focuses on the simultaneity of different cultures, separate in their own worlds, yet juxtaposed. It is the story of ancient India with its multiplicity of languages, design, textiles and people.

Embroidered jackets, coats and capes with ancient scripts like Pali and Dravidian, surface in languages that have lost their voices. These have been reworked in primal geometrics on velvet bodies like asymmetrical capes, formal evening jackets and pants. Instruments that have lost their sound have been conceptualized as decorative motifs in silk for kaftans, dresses and wraps. Mirrors have been worked on as a symbolic language of dots in circles, triangles and concentric circles. Mirrors and tattoos, central in the ‘Rabari’ tradition from Rajasthan, work as symbols that reflect back to us what we have lost. The multiplicity of our spiritual traditions can be seen in the flow of Dervish style coats and long cut-worked jackets.

Velvet being primary textile for the coming winter has been shown in black and tonalities of gray and brown. Color in the collection is very controlled mainly coffee, charcoal, gray, bordeaux and tonalities of black, creating a magical winter.

The philosophy behind the collection is ‘movement’, in an inward journey enveloping concepts of universal idioms. The symbolic use of nature’s elements with the hidden whisper of preserving and protecting life underlies the play of ‘falling’ leaves and wood beads. Eloquent embroideries emerge in contemporary styled jackets – for the Sonam Dubal Woman.

For Autumn Winter 2011 edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, Pallavi Jaipur has adopted ‘design’ which shows how basic principles transgress into various other disciplines, by drawing parallels between the architecture of Jaipur and her winter collection.

She has embraced on the fundamental tenet of design which is form and function. Form comes from the city of Jaipur in terms of shapes, cuts, proportions, visuals, materials etc. Function is driven by need which dominates fashion particularly contemporary fashion.

In her reflection geometric proportion like grid layout of the city and visuals of Jantar Mantar is masterfully reflected with the right dose of colour and styling. In other range, Pallavi pays homage to the mirror work that so wonderfully adorns Shish Mahal and cleverly brings it out on her silhouettes.

For WIFW A/W 2011, designer Niharika Sharma has come out with a collection taking one on a journey of fantasy and dreams.

An austere interpretation of nostalgic vision, using small ant, beetle from earth to kites and birds, rainbow from sky, it’s a fun collection rendering retro street look to wacky party look. The collection has powerful and rigid silhouettes to transparent maxi, small gathered skirt to lacy long skirt. The silhouettes are more of small girl or doll kind with gathered waistline. Geometric paneling, pin tucking and quilting with a lot of usage of different shapes and size complimented by sequins, feather and zip detailing sum up the collection.

Fabrics like fine raw silk, taffeta, fine lace and quilted satin lining give a luxurious feel to collection.

The student of second year of journalism, Malvika Rallan hit it off with glamour at the tender sixteen being among the top six finalists at Miss India Teen contest. She thinks it was the watershed moment which transformed her into a diva.

The self-confessed ‘not-so-social’ elegance personified, Malvika sees herself exploring the streets of Europe with her love or might be the next face of Chanel, ten years down the line.

Let’s know more about the facts and fiction of Malvika Rallan.

Tell us briefly about your formative years and academics.
Well, I am pursuing bachelors in journalism and mass communication. This is my second year and since I like writing I think I will end up being a columnist or writer

How you bumped into your first assignment? How it changed your life?
I remember I was sixteen and there was this Miss Teen India Pageant directly affiliated to the Miss India Team. So it was kind of a big deal, I was on vacation that time but when I heard about it, I rushed back to India and auditioned for the same. As luck would have it I was under the top 6 finalists and that was a pretty good achievement for me. In a month’s time I had transformed into a whole new person and that experience actually changed my whole perspective towards this field (in a good way of course).

What did you aspire to become as kid?
Since my mom was an artist, I thought I would rather be like an artist or a famous musician or something. I was never really interested in Math and Science.

Where do you see yourself in this cut throat competitive industry? What’s your success mantra?
Since nowadays everyone wants to be a part of this Industry, you have a lot of competition of course. So I focus on what I am good at and keep working on it, I have a set of rules which I follow which helps me in being more calm. I always do my homework and never show up on set without knowing the exact cause; I think that is what keeps me aside.

What do you love and hate most about modeling?
I think we should not take rejection on our hearts. Honestly being in this industry is nerve wrecking. You don’t always get what you want and there will be times when someone might just be better than you. You need to have a strong heart. Even if it seems all coated up in sugar, reality is bittersweet.

Which designers have you worked with nationally and internationally? Whom do you find appealing your aesthetic senses most?
Well, I have done quite a few shows for Indian designers like Rohit Verma, Aarshee Jamal, Aslam Khan, Paras and Shalini etc. I really want to work internationally and I think that will be my next step. Valentino, Moschino, Galliano and Vera Wang are my dream designers. I think I will collapse if I ever work with them.

Which other projects have you graced with your presence? Any big project in pipeline?
Well there are a few big projects brewing up for me which can’t really be disclosed but I believe good things are coming my way

How is Malvika as a person? What does she like to do when not modeling?
Well I am not very social, if I get some time off shoots I spend it with family or catch up with some soap operas. I like sitting at home and relaxing more than anything else.

Where do you see yourself 10 years down the line?
Wow, well I guess I would be in the streets of some European country spending time with someone I love and enjoying a box of macaroons or could also be the next face of
Chanel. Well that is the dream.

Any social cause that you are associated with?
Not yet but when I finish college I would most definitely be working on down syndrome kids. Since I have a brother who is a down syndrome this issue is very close to me and since I know there are fewer facilities for them I think I would work on building some.

Which is the most cherished moment in your modeling career?
I would say the day when I was selected for Miss Teen India was a proud day for me and my family since I was shortlisted from thousands of candidates. It was also the first time I actually thought I could be something, so the moment was special.

What’s your beauty and fitness regime?
I have been blessed with good skin but in this industry you need to maintain it. Cleansing skin before going to sleep is vital. I use minimal make- up for my skin to breathe and eat healthy.
For fitness I don’t do weights but a lot of cardio. Since I love eating, I eat in small portions so that I don’t gain weight. Water is very essential for a healthy body and skin so
I drink a lot of it.

What is your idea of an ideal date?
Well champagne and gourmet will work best. And, seriously a good conversation with someone who is equally interested would be great.

What’s your style statement?
I am very much amazed by the sixties so I try to follow that fashion. My style is vintage and I usually wear nude and jewel tones with a loud lip shade.
