Beauty with brain and oodles of attitude define the Goan chic Nolana D’Mello. Having scorched the ramp for the likes of Dior and Ferragamo, the sound engineer turned model, is also a qualified scuba diver, which she is undoubtedly very proud of. Recently got married Nolana is a busy girl to even go for honeymoon, courtesy WIFW. Here Fashionfad.in caught up with her in an exclusive tete-e-tete.

Tell us briefly about your early life, family and academics?
Growing up, I lived in Goa with my parents and younger brother. After school, I studied Audio Engineering in Chennai and then worked in Bombay as a Sound engineer for 2 years. Great job, I loved it a lot.

How you bumped into your first assignment?
I went to a party that happened to be a casting event held by Elite. They called me back after that. I said yes!

What did you aspire to become as kid?
When you’re a child every career seems to be exciting. That is the good thing about being a kid. I remember wanting to be a lot of things, a singer, a vet, an Orchestra conductor, a bus conductor…

Which shows( designers) and commercials have you graced with your presence?
I have worked with most Indian designers and international brands like Dior,
Ferragamo etc.

Your greatest achievement?
Most recently, I became a qualified Scuba Diver.

What do you think of bollywood as a career option?
Bollywood sounds great, not as an actress though.

When not modeling what are you most likely to be found doing?
Relaxing at home with a book.

Your take on modeling industry in India and abroad?
The models here are very comfortable in their own skin. There is little time and energy expended on insecurities and rivalry. It is not the stuff you see on the television. Those are just exaggerated representations. The industry in India has grown in leaps and bounds. Abroad, models make much more money that they do here and that is the biggest difference.

What exactly are pre trends, a new jargon in the world of fashion? Aah! Not really I just got overwhelmed with the variety of themes, inspirations and muses our designers have picked for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2011. The individual strengths of each collection hold enormous potential to convert into trend and hold the reins of some era resounding fashion and fad trends.

As I take a closer look I can already feel the sizzle of the brewing coffee. Architecture seems to have hooked a lot of designers even though construct and deconstruct them with individual finesse. Traveling and gypsy again resurge being quite a popular theme for spring summer in India. The beautiful and colourful array of flowers that brighten your garden in Spring also could not escape the eyes of our prêt makers. Next in row is the abstract and mythical characterization. And doing the broad round up for Pre trends is the Pop Art

And just after the clock strikes 3.15 pm today a week long extravaganza of fashion would begin with the opening show from the Mumbai based designer Anand Kabra who interprets the old city surrounding Charminar on clothes. Another designer who is translating architectural forms in constructional garments is Kallol Datta. Though his take on the subject takes us to Solovetsky nunnery to labour camps of pre World War I. Roma Narsinghani debuting at the WIFW this season is also inspired by the great architectural marvel sagrada famalia, a church in Barcelona, Spain. Formulating upclose with architectural genius is Samant Chauhan as his collection incorporates distinct architectural elements such as brick, sand and thatch of primordial period.

The next big thing for spring is definitely gonna be travel round the globe as nomadic charm and gypsy captures the fantasies of a number of immaculate dress makers this season.  Ankur and Priyanka Modi celebrate a collection in Turkish for inspiration creating wearable art forms. Geisha Designs draws inspiration from a longing to travel to the seas, basking in the sun’s glory. Zurhke define their collection in the magic and warmth of the Mediterranean. The journey just begins here as Kavita Bhartia travels Crossing borders and boundaries using the multi faceted skills of workforce transmigrating to vivid textures, prints, embroideries cross border inspired from Africa, Persia, England and France injecting a spirit of fun and excitement. Japanese Art and creativity would be resplendent in Urvashi Kaur’s creation. Wendell’s Favorite destination brings the Kunbi tribe of Goa.  And the travel themelogy glitters with surprise as the Tarun Tahiliani for the grand finale show construct The New Democracy from the colours and flavours of Rajasthan.

Flowers and blossoms weave the flying carpet under the summer sun for Pallavi Mohan’s Pocket full of poises that bright and vivid with dream like sequences. Koga as well is all set to unleash the unspoken power of a beautiful flower. Rahul Mishra transcripts this entire flower power theme on a new palette as he uses the Lotus for his centrifugal force. Manish Gupta brings sunshine artworks in the form of floral, circular and ray like patterns. Anita Dongre showcases Grassroot, her eco-friendly line to welcome the arrival of spring sun.

The abstract world with surreal imagery also flashes the coming season. Dozakh weaves a collection around the paradox of the human mind. Akaaro catches the emotional drama from a film called “21 Grams”. And things go ‘Out Of Mind’ with references the dark corners of the human psyche at 11.11 Cell Dsgn. Pratima Pandey is deeply moved by a Kunal Basu and Aparna Sen’s story “The Japanese Wife”. And fantasy and Flemish mythology accentuates Sanchita Ajjampur’s collection. Anupamaa Dayal writes the story of “Kinnaris’, a mythical tribe that lived in the Himalayas.

POP ART certainly gains power this season to give your eyes a pop in fashion and style. Dev r Nil has conjured up sepia toned Pop art dream in optical illusion prints. Walnut by Nidhi and Divya Gambhir sing Bubblegum Pop. Nikhita Tandon’s ‘Fantasy is so Important’ adds shots of some silver accents, wearable tatted lace and crochet. And yes Nida Mahmood the forerunner of Indian Pop Art has picked up Machis to bubble up all the barood and masala for Spring this time.

Catching up with a fully charged fashion designer is always fun.  Fashionfad.in caught up with the very pretty and effervescent designer, Pallavi Mohan who is famously known for her label “Not So Serious” By Pallavi Mohan.  Even though she has a show lined up on the first day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring summer 2011 which is going to start today. And she took us through her views on the buyers around the world, her collaboration with an Irish Brand, the launch of her very first Kids Wear Collection and Accessories Line, Wills Fashion Week and the FDCI. Here is a sneak peak of the “Not so Serious” tres belle creatrice de mode Pallavi Mohan.

How has the journey of being associated with Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week been?
Oh it’s been nothing but great. I personally feel the credibility of being a part of the Wills fashion Week is extremely good.  If you look deeply, every administration has its positive and negative points. But in the end it’s up to you and the way you look at it. But up till now I have always enjoyed working with the FDCI and the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

What sort of buyers are you targeting this year?
( Laughs) I LOVE ALL MY BUYERS. I want everyone to take interest in my creation. I love them all.

Do you find any difference between an International and the Indian buyers?
No, not at all! When we are talking about the mind-set of the buyers, I would want to say it’s not about International or Indian. They all grow with you. The International buyer’s obviously do not expect you cheat on them in terms of quality of the products, any delays in the shipment etc. They give you small orders first then when they start loving it they want more of your products.  I have been exporting for the last 2 years now. It is same scenario in India too.  Like, I have been supplying to Ogaan and Aza for over one and a half year now. Ogaan now has provided me with a personalized space in all of their stores with stands under my own label “Not so Serious by Pallavi Mohan”.

Do you find any difference of taste between both the markets?
No it’s not about the taste but it’s different when you are creating for the international market. I just have to create two collections in a year, one for summers and another for winters. But in India as we are famous for celebrating a number of festivals like Holi, Diwali, Teej and many more of such joyful festivities, so creations go up to 10 sometimes in a year.

Finally Pallavi any new upcoming surprise you are going to reveal this season?
Oh Yeah! I am going to launch my very first Kids Collection and an Accessories Line. Oh I am keeping my fingers crossed. You will see cute kids basically girl child on the runway with models donning these clothing line along with miniature accessories. I am very excited about this show. I hope everybody loves it!

Oh that’s wonderful! What about your collaboration?
Yeah! I am working with an Irish Brand called ROCIO. They are basically into eco-friendly bags to be specific. So I am collaborating with them. We are going to showcase some of the hand-made wooden bags and few clutches this season. I hope people will appreciate them as well. The brand is going to be under the label called Rocio for Not So Serious.

Nimirita Lalwani discloses her collection for Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2011. Her collection is all about romance, the kind that takes your breath away and sweeps you off your feet.

Inspired by the tale of love her collection is made up of floating chiffons, glitzy summer cocktail wear and floor sweeping gowns. There is play with transparency and chiffons have been knotted, crushed and pleated to give the pieces texture but still keep them light and sensual. Silhouettes are soft with dropped waistlines, tiered uneven hemlines and draped pieces.

With a fresh color palette of whites, beiges, lilacs, aubergines and moss greens and haphazardly appliqué lace the collection tilts towards fantasy and fairy tale like femininity. Fabrics namely chiffons, satins and tulle are used for this collection.

Ethical clothing line ‘Ela’ by Joyjit Talukdar embodies the ideology of sustainability in design by his collection at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2011.

Drawing inspiration from moods and emotions, Ela by Joyjit Talukdar is presenting the collection which is intertwined yet free flowing, soft, fragile, intense and playful. Green cotton, conventional cotton neither dyed nor treated forms the basis of this collection. Ela seeks to balance between the satisfaction of wearing clothes and preservation of the environment and social welfare by his collection.

For Will India Fashion Week Spring Summer ’11, Dolly J has come out with a range of short and long chic dresses with consciously casual look. A western daytime wear with Dolly J’s trademark in sheer fabrics with ethnic embroideries which take the element of layering and texturing to a whole new level.

Her entire range is about blending the contradictions in a woman’s character, her sensibilities with her aggressiveness, and her generosity with envy. So you find the contrasting colours of Black with Red or White with Red, in multiple layers that combine a chic and flowing look.
