Not only female models command more money but they lead the fashion runways with their good looks, heat up ads, selling everything from fashion to fragrances. But being a male model in an industry where females dominate is been a challenge.

It’s been said before that talent has no gender, while it remains to be seen if male models will ever close the wide gap with their female counterparts.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of UK has banned Gucci’s Advertisement for using excessively thin model.

The video ad for the Italian fashion brand features several models dancing to music. It concludes with the couture-wearing stars posing on couches and leaning against a wall. While the ASA received complaints about two images of two different models, only one (the image featured above) was deemed irresponsible.

In their ruling, the ASA said:“We considered that her torso and arms were quite slender and appeared to be out of proportion with her head and lower body. Further, her pose elongated her torso and accentuated her waist so that it appeared to be very small.”

However this isn’t the first fashion advertisement that ASA has criticized for featuring thin models. In 2015, an Yves Saint Laurent campaign too was banned by U.K.’s ASA for using a model who appeared “unhealthily underweight.”

Following which, French government approved a law to ban the use of catwalk models deemed to be excessively thin. Catwalk stars now need to have a Body Mass Index above a certain level, or they could face fines and up to six months in jail.

Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) takes new strides and conducts the male model auditions #GETNOTICED for AIFWAW16. Almost 200 aspiring models put their best foot forward showcasing confidence and poise for the 27thedition of the Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2016, to be held from March 16 -20, in the capital at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Lodhi Road.

An eminent jury comprising designers Rohit Bal, Varun Bahl, Divyam Mehta and ace choreographer Anu Ahuja shortlisted 24 new talent, who will get an opportunity to walk the ramp for a specially curated, menswear show, to be presented by three young designers at the Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2016.

Lately, France passed a bill aimed at banning super skinny fashion models, by requiring them to obtain a doctor’s medical approval to work in the fashion industry.

The law passed by the French National Assembly requires models to see a doctor, and requires photos that have been edited to alter a model’s appearance to include a caption indicating the alteration. The aim is to do away with the use of “excessively thin” models, reported BBC News.

The new law is also intended to make a positive contribution to public health. Modeling agencies that don’t comply with the new law, that requires models to see a doctor to be eligible for employment, could be fined $81,000. Non-complying executives at modeling agencies could also spend six months behind bars.

An initial draft of the law proposed having doctors determine if models could work based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). But after protests and lobbying from modeling agencies and the fashion industry, the law requires doctors to determine employment eligibility based on a combination of age, weight, and overall body shape.
