This past weekend I was flipping through the Financial Times’ How To Spend It when I spied Australian model Christina Carey in the fashion editorial “Mutinous Bounty”.

I’ve caught glimpses of her backstage and on the runway in New York and San Francisco – each time noticing her striking natural beauty and versatility – able to look modern, androgynous, ultra-feminine, or from another era altogether.

As I prepared to host a gathering last week, I thought fondly of India and friends there. On occasion in Bangalore, my friend Alison and I would enjoy an aperitif – Campari with orange and soda, a favorite in Italy and perfect on a warm evening in Bangalore.

Campari Orange Spritzer from the Barefoot Contessa (chef Ina Garten)

The vibrant hues of this aperitif – in red, orange and yellow, always remind me of saffron and of the variation of its colors seen throughout India – spice stalls, fabrics, the desert.

From my travels: a window seat in our haveli hotel room, Jaisalmer and a woman washing at a temple outside of Jaipur.

Back home in San Francisco, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge displays rich colors of saffron and appears to change shades, depending upon the weather and time of day.

San Francisco also happens to be the home of fashion designer Priya Saraswati.  The name of her boutique and clothing line is inspired by the value of the spice itself, as the most expensive in the world – Saffron Rare Threads. www.saffronrarethreads.com

When I lived in Bangalore, I lived right in the heart of the city – exactly where the zip code begins – “001”. I loved the centrality and conveniences, as well as seeing the preservation of historic bungalows peppered throughout the changing neighborhood.

In “56001”, at the cross of Lavelle and Vittal Mallya Roads, one can go in any direction for some of the best shopping in Bangalore – from the international labels housed at UB City, to the glamorous adornments found at Jamila and Seema Malhotra’s Shimmer, to Evolutionize, Ritu Kumar, Ffolio and everything in between.

The listings above are visible from the main roads and easy to find.
What I want to share – three, slightly hidden gems – each worth stepping off of Lavelle and Vittal Mallya to discover.

Tasveer
This gallery is devoted to contemporary fine art photography, often showcasing images of India’s life and landscape. Tasveer is one of the more sophisticated galleries in Bangalore and is also established in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.
Two years ago, I attended Tasveer’s opening for the exhibit Pilgrimage by British photographer Tim Hall.  In fact, I kept the catalogue and glanced through it recently after receiving notice about his current exhibit at Tasveer, Escape: Desert Coast Mountain. Whereas Pilgrimage captured the beauty of India’s people engaged in daily life, Escape captures raw landscape. The exhibit runs through June 26th.

These images look back to a romantic world and to an uncertain future, where the force of nature is both powerful and beautiful, to be admired and respected. – Tim Hall

Cinnamon and Pause
While on the subject of escape, I used to enjoy doing just that while visiting two wonderful boutiques right around the corner from Tasveer – Cinnamon for gifts, accessories, clothing and home décor, and Pause for unique home furnishings.

Fashion’s newest force of young designers showcased their senior collections at the annual, School of Fashion, Academy of Art University show in San Francisco. The garments and sculptural jewelry are one-of-a-kind. Here’s my wish list from the show –

A simple, feminine dress paired with a lattice necklace of creepy, clawed creatures from land and sea. Kaori’s necklace reminded me of lazy days watching hermit crabs on the beaches of Lakshadweep.

Goat hair jacket + latex dress with lacey prints + knit dress with little sparkling crystals = must haves for evenings out.

Rinat is off to Paris to further her studies in fashion design at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne*

Stephanie will be in NY this summer for an internship with Diane von Fürstenberg.

When in the mood to button-up, these collections offer detailing that is prim, proper, tailored, and perfectly patterned.

Young was selected for an internship with the innovative retailers, Opening Ceremony.

Ivy is also off to NY for an internship with Diane von Fürstenberg.

Inspired by India’s Ganges River, this balanced blend of ‘east meets west’ is a traveler’s delight.

Ghazaleh will be joining her colleagues in NY at Diane von Fürstenberg for an internship this summer. In 2008 she won the $25,000 CFDA Grand Prize Geoffrey Beene Design Scholarship. In 2009 Ghazaleh was awarded the French Scholarship Exchange and studied for a year at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne*; while in Paris, her savvy style was captured on several occasions by photographer Scott Schuman (TheSartorialist.com).

* L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne also happens to be the alma mater of one of my favorite fashion designers (and one of Pollyana’s favorites too), who lives and works between India, Milan and Paris – Sanchita Ajjampur.

While reading FashionFad’s Model Buzz on May 10th, announcing Estée Lauder’s new global faces, I had a fashion flashback and remembered seeing Liu Wen walk the runway at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. Here are a couple photos of the Beijing beauty, backstage and on the runway.

I have been in London now for over 5 weeks during which much of my time has been spent bracing the chill, shielding from the rain and amongst the crowds on the high streets of London.  However irrespective of this and the gloomy economic climate that London is encountering at present, I am treated to many, many stylish women sashaying down the streets exhibiting many of the different trends of the season whilst managing to look effortlessly stylish and at the same time ticking many of the ‘On Trend’ boxes.  I truly feel like a child to a candy store when I walk past the window displays of the array of designer boutiques and high street designer stores, and when I actually enter I remember to myself why it is I love London so, as for me London represents the fashion today, predicts precisely the fashion of tomorrow and has the legacy of the fashion of yesterday.  London exudes style, and it has to be said that real London fashion is on the High Streets where we are spoilt for choice of stores that host affordable to all, whether you are skinted or minted as they say in London, wonderful interpretations of what is on the international catwalks.  The accuracy of what the high street is hosting today can clearly be measured by the women walking the streets of London who are managing to replicate very intelligently what is on the international fashion set.

So what exactly is the fashion quotient the ladies walking the high streets of London are exhibiting?
My personal favourite look that I have seen time and time again and is being portrayed in almost every high street designer store on the streets of London is the cute ditsy dress toughened up by either an 80’s denim or cropped bikers leather jacket and worn with thick tights and slouchy boots.   Great look for the London Chill, once the heat rises the cropped biker leather jacket can be replaced by a denim or leather gilet, the tights can go and a pair of gladiator sandals or a slouchy pair of sandal boots can take the place of the slouchy boots.
Oh so bang on trend…

A great interpretation of a Prada printed dress by Miss Selfridge

A very cute feminine dress that can very easily be toughened up and softened up..

The perfect sandal boot by Dune that can be teamed up with most of this season’s trends, and surely can be taken forward to the next….

Oh so beautiful and bang on trend by Dune, the chain mail feature provides a combination of uber chic, glitz and high fashion, perfect for those summer months lying ahead…

Miss Selfridge has hit trumps with this great interpretation of a fab Chloe pair of  Utilitarian sandals.  These sandals are a major fashion statement in their own right.

Intricate embroidery and feminine tailoring can be toughened up by this leather biker jacket or leather gilet both by Oasis

Many of the women on high streets of London are braving the cold with their skater-styled swinging skirts with hot print action.  Of course during this cold period no bare legs are to be seen as they are covered with thick tights and worn with  slouchy boots or brogues.  This statement skirt is being sported with a classic white vest and boyfriend cardie, blazer and big oversized scarf and some are even teaming their uber stylish skirts with a casual parka.  During the summer months ahead, the tights will go, the boots or brogues will be replaced by the new wide chunkier pared back gladiator or ballet pumps, and out will come some sexy camisoles and blouses.

Topshop’s beautiful animal print skater-styled skirt will definitely turn heads.

Karen Millen’s silk georgette skater-styled skirt with all over asymmetric ruffles is so on trend as ruffles seem to be everywhere…..

Oh what lovely versions of the new multi-strap gladiator, as well as working well with the skater styled skirts, will also work well with cropped jeans, floral dresses and shorts….

Many very brave women with very well shaped pins are wearing shorts and a long tee, of course the staple London thick tights, slouchy boots or brogues and a tweed jacket or a military jacket.  The combination of ladylike and utility is fab and the result is effortlessly chic..

New Look always comes up trumps when picking up key looks and making them wearable and affordable for every day.  Great embellished utilitarian jacket which is bang on trend..

Many of the power dressers are seen dressed in grey suits teamed with camel coloured coats with nude coloured shoes.  Nude shoes seem to be working their way through to the evenings too, it’s no wonder as they are a real figure-fixer as a flesh-toned pair of heels will add inches to anyone’s legs……

Stunning 1971 Reiss Platform sandal with cutwork cuff, will look uber chic with a flirty mini or a sassy lbd and make those pins look endless.  Will look very high fashion with cropped harem pants……

Cropped harem pants are very much still on the high streets of London but are teamed up with cropped jackets and wooden heels.  Wow the combination is breathtaking and is an effortless combination of high fashion and the high street.

A wooden heel looks so hot right now.  Whether buckled, with cut-out details or in sheer mesh, it’s time to bring on the natural look.  For the summer seasons will work well with summer dresses, skater-styled skirts, shorts, actually most pieces from this season….

Of course many of the women on the high streets are playing it safe especially as there still seems to be no sign of the summer months but just cold, overcast and rain….  Jeans are always a safe bet, many are sporting skinnies tucked into boots (ankle, high, slouchy, UGG, wellies, you name it), some like me are brave enough to team up with ballet pumps.  Some of the uber stylish girls are wearing relaxed boyfriend jeans teamed with parkas and brogues – very young student style. Many of the women are sporting denim cropped jackets, denim shirts, denim skirts but the most exciting denim look I have seen here on the high streets of London is the dunga dress.  The dunga dress was teamed up with a black and white striped tee, thick tights, brogues and a trench coat.  Very stylish and fashion savvy, pure magic!  For the summer months to come, off go the tights and on come on a pair of gladiators.

Stella McCartney inspired Dunga-dress by Oasis

What are the key looks that I loved whilst on my travels through the high streets of London?

Matt nude comes alive with sparkly details for a luxe look.  This delicately embellished nude shift dress is just divine, very glamorous and has got a real vintage look about it even though it ticks all the On Trend Boxes.  This dress is a modern take on party wear as the silhouette is uber modern but the embellishment harks back to another era.  One could say it’s almost art deco, teamed with a pair of nude sandals pure perfection for an evening out….

Slouch Sequin Embellished Tank Dress by Reiss

The soft, fluid jersey is the season’s most flattering trend as it targets problem areas with strategically placed drapes and very intelligent structuring.  This trend has translated very well onto the high street as this incredibly feminine draped jersey dress made out of super lightweight jersey will skim rather than cling, and  has been nipped in at the curve of the back and has a waist belt resulting in a very soft look that will enhance any figure.

This is a look I am definitely loving and I intend to toughen this soft look with a washed leather gilet and slouchy sandal boots or the fab utilitarian sandals…  This look is oh just so London, and oh just so effortlessly stylish.

I am a real fan of the maxi dresses as they are so easy wearing and yet so laid back stylish.  So was overjoyed to see many of the high street stores having floor-sweeping maxi dresses, they can be so easily dressed down for the day,  I would team up with a cropped denim jacket and gladiators for a dressed down look for the day and in order to take the dress into the evening lose the cropped denim jacket and would team up with metallic wedges and statement jewelry, perfect for those Indian Summer nights.

Monsoon’s gorgeous floor length maxi dress

A walk on the high streets of London is a fashion journey that must be taken by all those fashionistas who want to know exactly what it takes to be In Vogue………….

This season, Louisa Parris offers another flirty wink to artist Piet Mondrian, adding his signature bold blocks of color to her gorgeous gowns. Parris’ characteristic soft silhouettes float effortlessly upon the slightest movement. Each gown deserves a special evening out, yet who would deny the temptation to slip on her yards of silk charmeuse, crepe, satin and tulle to lounge about – purrr.

As much as I would love to exercise sharp, editorial focus and choose one or two favorites to share, I simply cannot. I can, however, tell you that I’m obsessed with kaftans at the moment, and Parris’s glam kaftan- like gown, Pauline, seems perfect for a sunset garden party at a winery in Napa this summer. Or, one could take cue from San Francisco’s lovely Anja Manuel and select a Parris original (like the “Louise”) to wear to an opening night gala.

For the non-conformist who plans to attend the Black & White Ball (or any upcoming party with the same theme) – the Susanna, with a peek of color, is calling you. If a serene, neutral palette is your preference, then Trilby is, almost literally, sheer perfection.

A fashion design and marketing graduate from London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins, Louisa Parris was honored with their Women’s Wear Collection Award. She emerged again as a distinguished designer in 2008, receiving the Gen Art Styles International Design Award for Eveningwear. Parris recently launched her 2010 spring/summer collection and freelances as a designer for projects in the U.S. and the U.K. www.louisaparris.com

Introducing Pollyana Patel of Barker & Patel

I departed from modelling in catalogues and campaigns to complete my university degree, with honours, in Pure Mathematics. Shortly thereafter, I began a business career with Equitable Life Assurance Society, coordinating all IT support and training for 2,000 staff members. Recruited to the Halifax Bank Of Scotland in March 2001 to manage their Project Support Office, I soon discovered that my abilities and energy were also well- suited for the bank’s event management needs, where I focused my creativity and management skills to design and implement motivational events for 1,000+ staff. My experiences in event management and interpersonal motivation, combined with my background in modelling, inspired me to segue into the field of personal styling. I pursued a diploma from The Style Coaching Institute (U.K.) and am a Personal Stylist for professional individuals and groups seeking my guidance in wardrobe development, colour analysis, figure analysis, and, Psycho-cybernetics before moving to Bangalore with my husband and daughter 2 years ago.

On arriving in Bangalore, I volunteered for the Overseas Women’s Club (OWC) and served in the position of VP Activities & Events, assisting the club’s social objectives and charitable fundraising efforts to support 25 Bangalore-based charities.

I had an instant admiration and respect for Ritu and Rochana and felt truly honoured when asked to be the brand ambassador for Ritu & Rochana, as for me it epitomizes the essence of elegant, glamorous, chic, romantic, classy and comfortable apparel.  Their creative vision is truly inspiring, their commitment to their designs is aspiring, their work ethics are admiring and their finish is just impeccable, in fact comparable to many of the International Designers.

Ritu and Rochana is an India based fashion label with a global view. It is the culmination of collaboration between two designers with diverse experiences and similar sensibilities- Ritu Pande and Rochana Dubey Mitra.  Within 1 year of its launch in India, Ritu and Rochana is already retailing from Fuel in Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune, Chamomile in Mumbai, Aura in Nagpur, D’designers in Jakarta, Origins in Hyderabad and Ritu and Rochana Design Studio, Bangalore.

A play on textures, colors, patterns and silhouettes to create timeless beauty is the essence of true fashion.  Ritu Pande has lived this mantra for over 10 years in changing hues of global trends. Her debut collection in Mumbai (1998 ) was the beginning of a journey which has seen her evolve as designer with a distinctly international sensibility. Honing her craft by working with eminent fashion designers in Malaysia as well as Indonesia, Ritu combined a Pan-Asian take on design with Indian artistry to create subtly glamorous and unabashedly feminine clothes for the modern woman.

In 2005 , she launched her label “Ave Verum by Ritu  Pande” in Jakarta, Indonesia.  Ms. Insana Habibie, the daughter in law of Indonesia’s President Jusuf Habibie hosted the label’s first fashion show.  The clientele of Ave Verum is the crème de la crème of Indonesia- socialites, diplomats and prominent members of the Indian Diaspora.

A move to India in 2009 brought about collaboration between Ritu and Rochana Dubey Mitra. Their synergy created fresh magic and the launch of a new label ‘Ritu and Rochana’.  Fluid draping, sophisticated detailing and textured accents mark their range of stunning cocktail dresses and evening wear.  Ritu and Rochana make women look as well as feel beautiful by offering them versatile options- for a gala reception as well as a casual dinner party.

A passion for fashion has defined Rochana Dubey Mitra since a very early age.  A true artist, she perceives fashion as an Art form, a methodology and a different canvas involving the process of design.  She had her first show at the age of 19 covered by The Economic Times in June 93 and was amongst an elite group of talent from across the country, getting into National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. One of the most promising students from the faculty of Fashion Design, she graduated to work with designers such as Anju Modi & introduced a new line of indo-western fusion wear for the design house.

A move to Mumbai led to her being roped in by one of the premier Design houses in India – Tarun Tahiliani’s Ensemble, where she was responsible for the prêt line.   Driven by entrepreneurial ambitions and a need for creative freedom, Rochana set up her own design studio in 2001 where she sold under her eponymous label making western and indo-western semi-formals for the contemporary Indian working woman.  Two years later, a move to Bangalore resulted in a merging of creative energies by Rochana Dubey Mitra and Ritu Pande . The label Ritu and Rochana was born.  Together they crafted a brand that valued itself for its commitment to the art of dress-making, to the functionality of design and most importantly to making a woman feel truly beautiful. The brand creates an exclusive line of western ensembles and prides itself as one of the few in Bangalore, creating truly elegant evening wear.

It is a combination of this immense respect and admiration for the Ritu & Rochana Brand along with my sheer passion for clothes, shopping and people and enthusiasm for the powerful effect of Style & Coaching on an individual’s external image, internal image and outlook on life has driven me to join the Ritu & Rochana brand as brand ambassador and PR consultant.  Together our vision is to reach out to as many people as possible, taking each of them on the Ritu & Rochana Journey………….
