Where in India women prefer being a homemaker after their marriage this small town girl from Assam had a dream of making it big. To pursue her dreams Kavita Sachdev came to Mumbai and worked simultaneously to support herself. She learnt to be independent at the age of 18, was married at 24, a mother at 25 and today, at the age of 29, the reigning Mrs India received international acclaim being crowned as first runner up for Mrs Globe Pageant 2011…

Tell us something about your formative life and academics?
I was born and raised in a small part of Assam called Duliajan. I came down to Mumbai in the year 1999 to pursue my degree in English Literature from Sophia’s College. After the completion of my degree I joined Indian Airlines as a cabin crew. I continued with the job for three years and meanwhile I met the prince charming of my life and decided to get married.

How did modeling happen to you? How did it change your life?
After I gave birth to my daughter who will be of 4 years this November, life started getting very monotonous; it just revolved around my family and my child. So one fine day it was my mother in law who came up with the proposal of me getting into modeling which even I thought of giving it a chance. It was 2010 when I first walked the ramp for Mrs.Gladrags contest where I was crowned as Mrs.Gladrags.

So you always wanted to be a model? If you had not been a model what else would have yearned for?
I never gave a serious thought to modeling even though I walked at my college fests. But I always yearned to do something in the creative field. I was a lot into music and drama during my school days. I never wanted to do a 9 to 5 job, that’s why joined Indian Airlines as an air hostess after pursuing my degree.

What’s your style statement?
It’s very classic and simple. I believe that your clothes should express your personality. My style draws a picture of womanhood as I am pretty feminist by nature.

Tell me your beauty and fitness regime? How did you maintain yourself after being married with a 4 year old kid?
It’s really important to take care of yourself. I am a lot into yoga and practice various other forms exercise too like Pilates and aerobics. I go for weight training not on a regular basis but sometimes when required. And to sustain a healthy skin I do cleansing, toning and moisturizing regularly and maintain a healthy diet. Everything depends on how you manage your time, its all about balancing.

So what do you like to do when not modeling?
I love love love traveling. I design clothes and architectures intrigue me a lot so I also do a bit of interior designing for myself, my little daughter and for my friends.

When and what was your first modeling assignment?
It was during college fest I walked the ramp for the first time. After that I have performed for a few print editions. It was at Mrs. Gladrags in 2010, where I appeared for the first time on a professional level.

How do you feel being the first runner up at the Mrs. Globe Pageant 2011?
It was a very humble and elating experience. I feel proud when I think out of 37 countries across the world; I bagged the crown of the first runners up.

As we all know our Indian society holds a very conservative point of view regarding modeling. So what was your family’s point of view on you taking up modeling as a career after being married?
Fortunately for me my family has always been supportive, starting from my parents to my in laws. My mother in law suggested me to join modeling and my husband was super excited with the idea. And I think people are opening up in our country and their perception about modeling is gradually changing.

What was the most memorable moment of your life?
For me it was when I gave birth to my child. It was one of the most amazing feelings till date. It changes your whole perception; you tend to see things from a different point of view.

Comparison between the Indian models and the international models?
There is no difference, it’s a profession and people are pretty professional from wherever they might be. I had models from 37 countries participating along with me with a basic motto. Yes apart from that there is just one difference they are much taller than the Indian models …ha ha (laughs).
