2014 was declared the Year of the Butt, but when it comes down to what body parts people are actually most interested in exercising, Google knows all. To help us track the trends, the wise geeks at Google gave us two exclusive search lists that show exactly what people want to work out and how. Turns out, butts rank fourth on the list of the body parts most people want to work out.

When it comes to the top trending types of exercises, we were glad to see classics like Zumba, dumbbell exercises, and Russian twists make the list. But newcomers T-Tapp and pole dancing are definitely growing in popularity.

Coming on to the dietry routine, the low carb way of life piqued the public’s interest again in 2014. The caveman-inspired Paleo Diet was the year’s top trending diet, with the Atkins and “gluten free” diets rounding out the field. While Americans had a much bigger craving for chicken in 2014 than last year, there was also a rise in inquiries about meatloaf and banana bread recipes.

2So what was the most Googled fashion trend of 2014? Normcore dominated the search engine this year, presumably because they had no idea what it was. Over the past year, the disputed term has come to denote everything from stonewashed mom jeans, white socks and Gap’s “Dress Normal” advertising campaign.

When the trend first took off, forecasting agency K-Hole – which coined the phrase – told us that everybody had got normcore totally wrong. It’s all about having a hyper-adaptable personality and being able to fit in wherever you are, as opposed to a conscious aesthetic choice.1

Following Normcore is ‘Health Goth’, which ironically we had to google too. The trend appears to be a mix of gothic, punk and futuristic sport-luxe – the concept comes from Health Goth Facebook page, by American musician Mike Grabarek and eccentric designer Jeremy Scott, who post shots of monochrome and futuristic sportswear.

However, much more straightforward searches focused on items of clothing such as over-the-knee boots, full skirts, capes and culottes. At number five is crop tops; the nineties trend became so big this year that it even became popular within menswear.

The most popular designer on the internet includes some surprises. Whilst many renowned designers achieved a lot this year and the industry sadly lost some of its best talents including Oscar de la Renta and L’Wren Scott, it was a 19-year-old American blogger who tops the list.

Bethany Mota beat them all, including Alexander Wang, whose collaboration with H&M made plenty of headlines this year.
