International Men’s Day (Nov 19), is to celebrate the contributions that men make to improve the quality of life in society??

Isn’t this a laughing matter for some women!!

According to the Wikipedia, the event is about, “highlighting discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care.”

It is also focuses on improving so called gender relations, promoting gender equality, producing responsible males and highlighting positive male role models, addressing issues such as parenting, positive male role models, families and healthy life choices for men.

Men already dominate political and corporate hierachies, but feminism, currently healthier than ever, International Men’s Day, partly designed to end discrimination, is a bit of a joke, a campaign from people whose response to any statistic about women being physically abused or dominated or belitted.

Yet I’m all for International Men’s Day. As a supporter of the idea that men and women should be treated equally, why shouldn’t men have their own day to match the one set aside to promote women and their causes. But the question is does men actually face gender bias, after all it’s a Man’s World!! Well, for some who actually think, we bring you the video titled # ShowMenSomeLove, on so called discrimination.

We take a look on growing sexual abuse, violence against women, both in homes and on the streets, or how female foeticide is still a massive problem in India. The fact that India fares the worst in gender employment rates between men and women. Finally, is anybody bothered to address these issues on the forthcoming International Men’s Day than bringing out this video.

Inaugurated in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago, the day and its events find support from a variety of individuals and groups in Australia, the Caribbean, North America, Asia, Europe and Africa. Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Director of Women and Culture of Peace Ingeborg Breines said of IMD, “This is an excellent idea and would give some gender balance.” How??

Known for her quirky prints and designs, Kristy De Cunha doesn’t look at the obvious nevertheless she likes to experiment, innovate and construct.

Her collection La Casa Azul’ (meaning ‘The Blue House’) isn’t for the faint-hearted, she says, “My collections depicts Frida Kahlo’s raw emotions and her larger-than-life personality. What will stand out is the custom designed bold prints as well as the use of colours.”

Using bold colour, elaborate surface textures and prints, her artistic fashion statements, is visibly noticeable in the collection.

nd.28609Come 2015, Roberto Cavalli will launch a new women’s fragrance in February called Paradiso. The face of this new fragrance, supermodel Edita Vilkeviciute, was presented lately in a corner of paradise, at the gorgeous Villa Tritone in Italy.

Sorrento, or Surriento as they say in the Neapolitan dialect, is one of the many gems that we have in Italy, posted Roberto on Bello. Here nature has created a piece of paradise on earth. Sorrento, situated on the Gulf of Naples, offers a stunning view across the water to Vesuvius – a volcano famous for having buried the Roman city of Pompeii in its volcanic ash in 79 A.D. Not far from Naples the coast road that runs through Sorrento, Positano and Praiano to Amalfi is one of the most scenic routes in the world with views of the enchanting Isle of Capri.

In this area, the colours are bright and the scents are strong, intoxicating… I’m in Sorrento to present my latest creation to the press, my new perfume that I have named PARADISE!

Created in collaboration with Coty Master Perfumers, Paradise is a perfume that I wanted to create to enhance natural feminine charm, to make every woman even more irresistible!

This fragrance evokes my travels around the world and it combines exotic Oriental fragrances, a tribute to women and their beauty.

I am in the company of the beautiful Edita Vilkeviciute who will be the face of the advertising campaign for Paradise. Her beauty is intoxicating and in the beautiful setting of Sorrento evokes this earthly Paradise…

The fireworks have concluded a fantastic evening spent in the company of so many friends.

The use of scents is lost in the mists of time. It has always been used in the art of seduction and from next February, Paradise will be your secret ally…

Un grosso bacino…

1L’Oreal USA announced the five recipients of its prestigious For Women in Science fellowship 2014, for their outstanding contributions in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Ever since the launch of the program in 1998, more than 2000 scientists in over 100 countries have been recognized for their excellent work in their respective fields.

With its 11th edition this year, For Women in Science program has awarded 55 post-doctoral women scientists more than $2 million in grants in the past years. All the participating candidates were evaluated based on their intellectual merit, research potential, scientific excellence and their commitment to supporting women and girls in science. However, the novelty in this year’s selection was the emphasis put on the fellows’ commitment to serve as role model for younger generations.

The jury included experienced scientists in the candidates’ respective fields through a partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which managed the application process.

The well-deserved recipients this year are:

Katie Brenner-a bioengineer who developed a technique to enable early diagnosis of neonatal infections.

Livia S. Eberlin- having discovered the limitations of cancer diagnosis methods currently used today, she developed her own technique to more efficiently diagnose and evaluate cancer – a technique that’s proving to be incredibly promising in a pilot program for gastric and other cancers.

Jennifer Laaser- her research will impact future efforts to design gene therapies.

Lauren O’Connell-a biologist studying poison dart frogs in the Amazon, a research that could lead to new biomedical discoveries and improved conservation.

Sabrina Stierwalt-an astrophysicist leading a multi-university team on ground-breaking research to understand how galaxies were formed.

Meanwhile, the award ceremony held on 13th November honoured the fellows in front of government, community and STEM leaders. Also, the program this year included multi-faceted, week-long program of activities to engage the fellows in the broader STEM community.
