To celebrate the spirit of International Women’s Day Neelam Pratap Ruddy hosted a champagne lunch lately at Cibo, Hotel Janpath in New Delhi.

More of a therapeutic one, this glamorous and high powered afternoon saw the acts like reflexology from Vedic Spa Mantra being offered over special session of Tarot, Angel and Coffee Cup reading by Neera Sareen.

The event was graced by a host of illustrious names from different walks of life. These names include designer Ritu Beri, Poonam Sharma, Dr. Najma Heptulla, Renu Hussain, Tanisha Mohan, Ala Madhu, Vandy Mehra, Bubbles Sabharwal, Kavita Bhartia, Harjinder Kaur, Dr. Nidhi Gupta, Kiran Agarwal, Dr. Sonia Kumar and Shalini Sehgal amongst others.

CCI’s Let’s Design 5 saw talent in variety from every corner of India. But after several rounds of eliminations in the reality house, Deepjyoti, Vedangi, Harjosh, Dimpali and Anu emerged as the most talented and were chosen to compete for the grand finale round.

In the grand finale task, the participants had to create two cotton ensembles, one pret-a porter and the other as couture/diffusion. The designers were given ten meters of cotton fabric in variations to create two ensembles in just two days. From crochet to jacquard to crinkled cotton, the participants were required to use all the varieties to come up with two looks that redefined cotton in the best and most unique way.

Fueled with passion, coffee and the dread of deadline, the participants came up with some very interesting designs. Textures, embellishments, modern tailoring, clean cuts, androgyny, surface developments and feminine were some of the noted themes and techniques.

Grand finale venue was filled with new talent, eminent members of fashion industry and lots of nervous yet excited faces as Let’s Design 5 celebrated these top five designers on 5th February, 2013in front of high frenzy media and non stop shutterbugs.

The designs created by the participants were judged by an experienced and able panel of judges which included Sunil Sethi (President of FDCI), designers Payal Jain, Rina Dhaka and David Abraham along with Agnieszka Fizol, program head CCI, India. The talent quotient was so high that the judges could not decide on one final name and finally chose two winners instead of just one. Harjosh and Vedangi were unanimously chosen as the joint winner of the final round who received an opportunity to showcase their designs in “high five” category of FDCI’s Wills India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 edition, cash prize of five lakh rupees each and a four page spread in Verve magazine.

Season five of Let’s Design saw history being created with a record-breaking number of entries and two winners for the grand prize and a fantastic opportunity to showcase at fashion week.

Straight after the regular journey from New York to Paris, it was time for Milan to show its enigma of allure. The 7 days fashion week very gently collide with the country’s general election, as the country currently stand without a Pope and Prime Minister; Camera della Moda is very much uncertain of how the future will treat them. As later the govt. will decide on the fund reluctance in the culture, design & fashion sector; though the slogan of ‘made in Italy’ is in its peak and why not the country has really given the world a great design perspective.

Designers are very well aware of the situation and very modestly continued as per their reputation. Milan mostly showcases the big authentic names apart from some fresh designers at the end day. Major designers were focused to their respective Clientele market, unlike Paris in Milan the extreme avant-garde never made its way out rather we see a very practical contemporary solutions.
Silhouette: Long dresses with classic style and loosely draped one, bifurcations from Antonio Maras, Dsquared, Moschino, N21, Missoni, oversized jackets from Max Mara, trench coat & double breasted jackets were few more trends to capture the eyes. Also leather & fur were seen stealing the attraction at some shows.
Colors: This season there was a lot of courage by the designers to imply various colors though don’t forget they were showcasing the fall winter collection. As usual black & gray dominated the catwalk but in between the pop was very attractive. Electric blue used by Alberta Ferrati, Missoni & Fendi. Fuchsia & Red was seen at Alberta Ferrati, dsquared, Fendi, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli. Yellow & Gold appeared as a pop up color at Etro, Max Mara, Versace & Jil Sander. Prints: As like summers prints were not the primary focus but designer like Antonio Marras used print as an art in canvas, some other were Dolce & Gabbana using prints to depict the Church prints and Roberto Cavalli with its Maximalist approach of mixing things.

Accessory: Yes apart from apparels, the made in Italy tag has given a great sensibility with traditional technique to shoes & leather goods. Antonio Marras, Fendi, Dsquared, Max Mara, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana & Jil Sander were some to display a wide variety of leather goods along with the apparels. Un-doubtfully brands like Marni & Bally who are specialized showcased a larger range of leather goods.

The season ended in a very positive not as the luxury segment continued to overcome the economic hurdle. Lastly we saw that after 2 years and with some mixed bags of comments designer Umit Benan departed his way out from Trussardi.

If those old world weapons and armour churn your fascination, you needn’t drool anymore, as Windlass Steelcrafts, the India-based globally recognized company known for offering world-class replicas of medieval weapons, armour and other historic goods, announces the launch of its online store, ‘Collectors Heritage’.

The store will offer a large variety of products, including period clothing, accessories, sculptures and weapons, right from the medieval era. Besides, an attempt is also being made to introduce Live Action Role Play (LARP) in India to avail authentic licensed products including costumes and accessories from epic films like Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, 300 and Gladiator.

Adhering to the weapon laws in India, the products are replicas made exclusively for showcasing purposes. Though the swords and knives are true to the carefully researched originals, these cannot be used, as they have been permanently mounted on plaques/frames, and exude the true character of the weapon, thus making them pieces of art to adorn homes and offices.

Speaking at the launch, Sugandh Windlass, COO, Collectors Heritage said, “Making up for the paucity of well-researched, historically accurate quality weapons, armour and period clothing, Collectors Heritage will cater to the increasing interest in medieval history. The brand aims to add charm to your living rooms with the experience and breathtaking craftsmanship that Windlass prides itself upon. With the bank of information, sourced from libraries, museums and private collections world over, precision is the first priority in the manufacturing process of all our products.”

After the successful launch of its Work in Progress series with the first collection from Cue by designer duo- Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna last September, and then Gaurav Gupta, Evolv now brings to you an exclusive Limited Edition Pret Collection by Small Shop.

The Spring Summer 2013 collection tells a story around green energy in fresh colors for a nice plan, showing urban spaces replete with plant life, cloud energy, wind mills, water and happy penguins. The collection comprising of menswear, womenswear and accessories feature t-shirts, tunics, dresses, swimwear, cushion covers and cell phone pouches.

The specially developed discharge prints in soft, playful colors with occasional bright accents and tiny sequence clusters are the distinguishing features of the collection.

About this vivid assortment of visual delights, Anshu & Jason says, “Well we always start with some dreaming, doodling and then bam you just get on the floor and emerge when it’s done. In the real world of course we put down an idea, work the colour swatches, exploration and execution naturally follow, what one kept in mind here also is that it’s a specific market and age group .

For the upcoming edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, the Kolkata based label Ekru by Ekta and Ruchira presents their Autumn Winter 2013 collection titled, Indian Kaleidoscope – inspired by their travel across the diverse land of India.

Predominantly formal yet relaxed and festive, this collection ideal for travellers features traditional Indian silhouettes contrasted with Avant-Garde drapes, which in turn emulates the drapes of Indian saris, creating an interesting cross current of form. Traditional A- line and tent shapes have been merged with slimed and restrained volume in the lower torso.

The collection also flaunts fair amount of structured jackets, which are layered with Kalidar (paneled) inners and flared Palazzos. The colour palette is brightly festive, restrained only through the use of black, white and grays. Thread work and motifs borrowed from traditional textiles have been given a twist by mixing and matching. There has been a generous use of sequins and pearls.

Even the textiles used in the collection also reflects the same diversity as the colours and motifs used – Matka for Bihar, Chanderi from MP, chiffons and woven yardages along with borders from Banaras, all finds it place in this kaleidoscopic journey.
