Swarovski to Restore Venice
In yet another collaboration between the cultural sphere and the fashion and luxury world, the newly established Swarovski Foundation will underwrite the restoration of the statue of Saint Giorgio, missing an arm, its surface roughened, by birds.
Nadja Swarovski, who heads the board of the company’s foundation, said her family’s company, known for its crystal, chose the statue as its first project in part because of an artisanal connection. “The historical relevance of Venice and the art of glass-making, mirrors Swarovski’s mission of breaking the boundaries of crystal in art and architecture,” she said.
The restoration of the San Giorgio statue is meant to be completed on April 23, 2014 — Saint George’s day.
