The highbrow/lowbrow world of fashion hails anyone with talent spiced up with eccentricity, and the young brigade of Indian designers apprehends it quite well. A very staple of this glamorous brigade is designer Sonaakshi Raaj who recently made her runway debut at Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2012.

An interesting mix of authenticity and talent, Sonaakshi embarked upon her fashion journey by graduating in Apparel Manufacture and Designing from SNDT University, Mumbai in 2009, where she bagged the Best Collection Award for her exquisite designs, and laid the foundation of ‘The Label’.

Over the time the label became synonymous with opulence and high craftsmanship creating glamorous ensembles catering to women’s couture wear that is distinctly feminine and refined. By combining tailoring with drapery, along with her signature elements Sonaakshi specializes in Indian and Western wear.

Previously an assistant designer to Manish Malhotra, she currently designs and styles for the leading actors in the Indian film industry. The designer has had designed for Bollywood films like Yamla Pagla Deewana and Bittoo Boss besides working for commercials like Nikon and Sunsilk featuring Priyanka Chopra. Moreover, she also styled and designed various shoots for acclaimed photographer Vikram Bawa.

Currently, ‘The Label’ doesn’t boast of any flagship store but retails from multi-designer fashion stores like Fuel across the country.

Jade Bridal CollectionJade Bridal Heirlooms by designers Monika & Karishma presents its latest collection, paying homage to today’s contemporary bride.

The collection sees global influences in the form of structured lehangas paired up with modern sleeveless jackets and jewels encrusted corsets, giving the traditional bridal ensembles a contemporary twist.

The colors palette is comprised of pastels, mustard yellows, coral oranges, coral reds and royal blues with shades of pink and stone grey. Hues of gold, copper and bronze are used in perfect harmony to create stunning textures.

The highlight of the collection is the new opaline gemstones used to create exciting jewel like ornamentation.

For the 2013 men’s collection at New York, the new spring uniform embraces a relaxed American attitude. Heritage prep is reconsidered with a modern execution and unbuttoned ease inspired by the codes and camaraderie of collegiate sporting clubs.  The classics are reinvented with a youthful irreverence that discards the rules and champions a new approach to iconic men’s pieces.

The brand’s hallmark colors – spirited blues, crisp whites and athletic reds – feature prominently in nautical rope print stripes, regatta jackets and regimental details. Hybrid themes play throughout – the bret on jersey fused with a classic oxford and a striped leather espadrille sneaker. Unexpected twists bring a lighthearted feel, from the quintessential collegiate blazer done in jersey to the knit tie incorporated onto the front placket of shirts. For unscripted adventures, outerwear is given a rebellious edge with the canvas meets leather moto-trench and suede desert bomber jacket.  Distressed chinos and denim are introduced in a nonchalant fit that feels familiar, like well-worn vintage favorites.

New York Fashion Week SS13The onset of fashion week season comes with a pinch of spice and a satchel full of surprises for every fashion enthusiast. The story repeats at Spring Summer 2013 preview that started just few days back in New York with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week – showcasing a bevy of designers – from veterans to next generation of emerging talent.

The first three days at the fashion extravaganza which marks the arrival of international fashion week season witnessed the names like Prabal Gurung, Jill Stuart, Alexander Wang, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Rebecca Minkoff, Ruffian and Lacoste amongst others.

The first set of fashion filled days vouched for relaxed silhouettes, subtle skin show in form of bare midriffs and cutout backs, and dominance of blacks and whites. Designer Prabal Gurung rolled out an India inspired range seeing an interesting blend of east and west.  The loose-fitted printed collection with layered tunics, jacquard pants and skirts was inspired by Amish Kumar, the Mumbai-born and London-based sculptor.

The Spring Summer 2013 showcasing of Alexander Wang saw the designer experimenting with volumes. The geometrical precision of designs in black and white stood out in the form of shirt dresses, leather T-shirt dresses, jackets and fitted skirts held together by fishing wire. Interestingly, the retro Hollywood glamour came alive in the collection of Jill Stuart who presented an array of satin, chiffon and lace dresses and tops besides jacquard trenches and slinky gowns in muted shades of pink, white, black and champagne.

The quilt-making from Alabama ruled designer Max Azria’s collection for Herve Leger. The well-fitted figure-enhancing dresses with patchwork designs, appliques, embroideries and geometrical prints formed the collection including a high-neck bandage dress and a leotard. The international high-street brand, Lacoste, on the other hand, presented a tennis-inspired sportswear range. The relaxed silhouettes and color palette comprised of white, black, red and blue formed the collection featuring polo shirt dresses, parkas and dresses with layers of sheer.

Wedding Personified by SejalThe ineffable glitz and grandeur of Indian weddings comes to life through Sejal Kanoi’s new collection paying tribute to the timeless beauty of the Indian women and the mystical magic that they create when draped in colorful Indian ethnic wear.

The collection weaving dreams and hopes into intricate motifs, sparkles and embroideries comes as an interesting mix of ethnicity and modernity. The highlight of the collection is the innovative idea of using intricate embroidery and classy design making the creation look heavy on the outset but is supremely feather light, twisting the conformed ideas of couture.

About her collection Sejal says, “Fashion is a canvas which allows your imagination to run wild. I always wanted to create something to celebrate the sensuous side of the Indian woman in the most exotic way.”
