Kolkata based designer Shantanu Goenka delves into Chateau of Versailles, home of King Louis XVI and his infamous wife – Marie Antoinette to roll out his Spring Summer 2012 collection at WIFW.Being greatly inspired from Alexander McQueen, Shantanu also pays a tribute to this fashion legend through his latest collection. Here is a sneak peek into the collection.

Shantanu has beautifully captured the magnificence of the palace of Versailles and it’s over the top baroque detailing and architecture in his range. The carving on the walls and furniture has been brought through the fine gilt and thread embroideries and appliqués. Moreover, the grandeur of the palace has been reflected through reflect the different rooms with its rich hues, wallpaper prints, luxurious silks and gold leaf-like embellishments .The fringe details and opulent tassels from the vintage French upholstery has been generously used as trims on garments along with jeweled encrusted bows and neckpieces.

Few of the highlights of the collection are scooped necklines with feminine frills, structured corsets and torsos and engineered drapes, rendering it retro feel. However, the three dimensional pleating, tucking and exaggerations make the collection in sync with modernity.

Beautiful floras juxtaposed with the gold carved walls and classic French wallpapers are depicted through the soft yet bold prints. Duchess satins, summer silks, taffetas and rolls of fine tulles have been used along with fluid satin organza and gold Chantilly laces which are reminiscence of the 18th century textiles which are still popularly used by couturiers all over the globe.

The color palette is comprised of lauder greens, teals, rich jam pinks, creamy whites, vintage rose and marmalade gold.

After a fabulous display at India Mens Week 2011, designer Sanchita Ajjampur is back with a smash at the WIFW SS’12 with her womenswear range celebrating conceptual craft, materials and narrative decorations, consciously blurring formal deco elements and streamlined designs.

The collection consists of floaty kaftans, liquid volumes for evening gowns, bikinis and harem style lounge pants (semi structured) created from the fabrics including crunchy cotton, ultrafine jersey, paper silk, cotton jersey, silk satin georgette and crinkled muslins. Giving life to the collection is a vibrant spectrum of tropical and Popsicle tints, such as watermelon, cherry, root beer, grape, lime, pineapple, ice and blueberry.

Soft, airy asymmetries and fluid drapery form the silhouettes. Newer techniques as a result of exploring Japanese structures have used to create elliptical and ovoid vests, tees and dresses with gathered and paper-bag waists and hems.

The accessories in the collection are refreshed by combining different aspects of industrial design, sports technology and crafts in the same color palette as the ensembles are.

Hemant and Nandita’s exclusive collection for the SS’12 WIFW entirely follows the cuts of the 60’s and 70’s epoch. This spring summer WIFW is going to exhibit the art of camouflaging. Designer Chandrani Siingh Fllora will be displaying the trend of military camouflaging through her theme ‘CAMOUFLAGE’. The combination of natural rudiments in various fascinating patterns and forms used to mislead the enemy clan and reinstate authority and achievement in the atmosphere is taken up as an inspiration by Chandrani for this spring summer.

Cotton and luxe fabric blended with satin and georgette is used to give a feminine touch to this military look. And the utilization of flower patterned geometry with three-dimensional eccentric embroidery brings a transmutation from casual to chic. The touch of embroidery showcased in Chandrani Siingh’s creation is an exemplar of ‘ikat’ stitches. The combination of Kantha stitch and kathdana highlights are very well illustrated in her pieces along with the piping adding more drama.

Earthly hues like orange, yellow and calm and illusive, natural hues of green and brown accentuated with metallic elements of gold, copper, bronze and dull silver creates Chandrani’s array. The dizzying heights you touched make you stand apart from the rest. Tell us something about your journey from a simple starry eyed lasso to a ramp scorcher…

Well, I am friends with about 10 Miss India girls including Parvathy Omanakuttan, Manasvi Mamgai, Shweta Dolli, et la likes. It is kinda fun knowing about Miss India pageant from these beautiful young ladies.

When it comes to menswear sobriety doesn’t go with the zeitgeist of the season – fashion is all high on happy pills. The vibrant bonhomie between fashion and frivolity is quite prevalent, as the earlier has divorced tyrannous solids for the latter. In short, fashion is at its playfully rebellious best for the Spring Summer 2012.

The whole laid back Jamaica meets Wall Street vibe with Afro-Asian artisanal flavour is the new love of the designers across the world. From recently concluded Men’s day at London Fashion Week to Van Heusen India Men’s Week, the designers have a say – carpe diem. It’s like Cirque du Soleil with splashes of colors creating abstract print extravaganza. From hyper color flora and fauna, to different motifs and paisleys, to wide stripes and checks, the prints have never been as diverse as this time. Designer Manoviraj Khosla, who lately showcased at India Men’s Week 2011 concedes, “There is no limit to what and where you can use prints. From clothes to inner wear, to footwear; it works everywhere.”

Actually, the stereotypical black and white male lifestyle is fading fast. The new alpha male has no ego burst showing love for his daughter’s Malibus and Barbies. He is out and loud with it. Being self-assured of his sexuality, he is comfortable to walk down the crowded street dressed in happy prints. But the line is to drawn somewhere as you might end up looking like Mr. Malibu Doll. Rajvi Mohan quips, “I think prints are an essential integration for both innerwear and accessories besides the outerwear but the line should definitely be drawn in mixing too many prints together creating a cluttered look. Use it sparingly as a pocket square or tie against solid textures or even a shirt- but avoid going all print.”

She further adds that to go flawless with the trend, use it with a touch of subtlety as a pocket square or tie while being all confident and assured. Though fashion doesn’t conform terms like flawless, it’s all about hit-trail-and-being-distinct, but somehow it creates wonders if embraced with effortless and understated vibe. Being overwrought robs it of its charm. Manoviraj concludes it by saying, “Men should not overdo prints while wearing them. Any one item of clothing should be in a print. It could either be the shirt or jacket or the pants.”
