After a successful launch of Fashion Workshop last season, LFW organized its third edition of the Fashion Workshop Series concentrating on the ‘Business of Fashion’ in collaboration with Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) at Grand Hyatt, Mumbai. The day long workshop explored the buyer and designer perspectives on various facets of the ‘Business of Fashion’. Divided into different sections, it saw the who’s who of fashion opining about the needs and prospects of Indian fashion industry.

The workshop delivered a series of unique experiences, each designed to explore a particular element of fashion from the vantage point of different stakeholders. Panel of reputed buyers like Aparna Badlani (Zoya), Caroline Young (Independent Buying Agent), Pearl Uppal (Fashion & You) and Sushil Jhaveri (Fuel) discussed the importance of customization of the collection to the India’s seasonality which is centered around Summer/Resort and Festive seasons.  The panel also reinforced the importance of quality control, production capabilities, and pricing as key aspects in the success and stocking of designers in Indian stores.

It turned out to be a big step forward in exposing the realities, requirements and limitations faced by the buyers and designers, as Drashta Sarvaiya, Masaba Gupta, Nachiket Barve, Narendra Kumar, Neeta and Siddarth Lulla, Riddhi & Siddhi Mapxencar discussed various issues that concerned designers, the biggest being consignment based association with buyers and other issues like infrastructure capabilities, production problems for startup designers. The aspiring designers and students in the packed audience took back a checklist of requirements before launching a collection, also got great tips on showcasing and selling.

The Spring/Summer 2011 collection by Varun Sardana was unveiled at the British Council, New Delhi.

His collection based on the journey of circadian change. The change which marks the sense of loss and gradually insinuate the sense of moving on. So taking inspiration from it, Varun collaborated with other visual artists to explore how the premises of fashion can be expanded beyond the conventional audience and see the interplay and resonances of expressing one idea through different mediums.

Working with a neutral palette, the primary colors are black, beige, white and ivory. He focused on the body and ways of defining and shaping the form but in the softer way. The lines are not sharp but flow along the curves of the body. Besides, there is an extensive use of hand and couture based skills to achieve the concepts used in the collection.

When it comes to Lekha, some je ne sais quoi seems to rev up her enigmatic allure every time you see her. Be it her ‘nonchalant – I am good, you are good’ deportment or be it the oozing oomph, but surely she is collar-clutching-ly infectious. Effortlessly chic and inadvertently raw this traveler by heart and dreamer by day was a runner-up at Ford Supermodel of the World Contest in 2009.

Having walked the ramp for the likes of Tarun Tahiliani, Manish Arora, Anita Dongre, Suneet Verma and Ritu Beri, she calls herself an all and all fashion model pigeon holing bollywood and other tantalizing posterior baits.

So lets peep into the kaleidoscopic world of sensually tugging Lekha Raman confessing her guilty pleasure for cigarettes and messianism for Madonna.

Tell us briefly about your journey so far by now…
My journey has been full of adventures and a lot of learning experiences till now…. been a slow and smooth journey.

The way you bumped into your first assignment…
A gentleman from Pune who is now my friend, asked me to do a show for him. It was for  RSI club in Pune and that’s how I started walking the ramp.

Your fancy as a kid…
A scientist.

Fashion for you…
Fashion is what comes from within and shows off your fashion-ness through what one wears his attitude, confidence and calmness.

A person whom shoes you would like to walk in…
Madonna.

Bollywood dreams…
Have not thought about it but I think I’m more of a fashion model.

Designers you graced  with your panache…
I have walked for Tarun Tahiliani, Rocky S, Anita Dongre, Manish Arora, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Suneet Verma, Ritu Beri and more and some more……

You bide your leisure time by…
Listening to music, traveling to great locations in the country and mostly including creativity with whatever I do.

Any social cause that you really want to stand for…
I definitely would like to be of any help to the orphans in India. I would like to help them with basic necessities and basic education. I will definitely help the Orphanages.

Your take on the modeling industry in India and abroad…
I think the modeling industry in India is small but is progressive by the years. Whereas fashion capitals like Milan and New York have a much bigger industry. Would love to walk for Paris and Milan fashion week and that would be my greatest achievement.

Your take on work pressure leading models to substance abuse and suicides…
I think it’s all about how strong one can be facing all the negative energies around. If one loses his strength in between the battle of life, it leads to cowardly mistakes. Always remember it’s a precious life….. Live to the fullest and let live to the fullest.

Any interesting experience in your career span…
My first show for Manish Arora. It was just a mind blowing show. I had a blast walking for him.
