The Gap has been making headlines as of late, one reason being they just hosted the Met Gala and the second despite numerous attempts to crawl out of a financial hole they continue to hit rock bottom.  It’s no secret that for years the American brand has been struggling to gain momentum and they hoped things would turn around after hiring Patrick Robinson to take over as head designer back in 2007.  Robinson, who was once hailed as a “megabrand messiah,” is credited for breathing new life in Armani during his four-year tenure there and Anne Klein in 1995. Despite Robinson’s past successes with other brands Gap sales are down 14% since he took over and Gap’s CEO puts in bluntly in the Wall Street Journal, “We have not been happy with the performance since late 2007.”  While Gap Inc.’s Old Navy and Banana Republic divisions are showing signs of life, the Gap brand itself continues to struggle with styles that consumers find easy to ignore.  Mr. Robinson says in an interview that he is aware that the design choices he makes define how people think of the entire brand and intends to stick it out. "I like how big of a challenge it is," he says.

Reinventing Gap, the nation’s largest specialty apparel chain, has been fashion’s equivalent of climbing Mt.Everest for much of the last decade, as sales and profits have dipped, along with its image among young consumers.

Robinson is the third designer to attempt to save the Gap since 2003, when sales were at an all time low for the brand.

Robinson has committed himself to revamping the denim collection for the brand.  He spent 18 months reworking the blue jeans from scratch. He studied the fit of designer denim, with its $200-and-up price tags, and recreated the body-shaping, butt-boosting fit at prices as low as $59.50 for women.  The denim which first debuted this spring has been well received by both fashion critics and consumers.

This fall, Gap will hope for another hit by applying its denim enhancements to the rest of its pants. Mr. Robinson calls it the "big, big next step." It will offer men’s and women’s trousers that can be worn to work in a limited number of styles and a handful of colors.

The biggest question is will Gap see any changes in its sales?  No doubt it’s the one store from which most people we know refuse to pay full price because no matter what the product is–jeans, leather jacket, sandals–it’ll be at least 30% off within a few weeks.  Gap also finds itself without a niche.  The Wall Street Journal points out, Old Navy’s gone back to appealing to the suburban mom while Banana Republic’s perfected their urban professional target, but who is Gap for? The woman who shops at J.Crew?

Take a look at the current spring/summer 10 collection and campaign.

The much awaited Ravi Bajaj store finally opened at DLF EMPORIO on Wednesday! The store carries a highly specialised line of Ravi Bajaj saris. The expansion as enumerated by Bintii Malhotra (Director – Ravi Bajaj Design) is a logical extension for the brand, "Since Emporio begets a foot fall comprising of ladies who wish to indulge in couture by Indian designers, we thought it was a good idea to carry only one of our products i.e. the sari which does extremely well for us in this category".

The store itself is done up in a typically Ravi Bajaj style : understated luxury! Beveled mirrors and wall paper, antique flooring, Italian leather clad display system, gold leaf furniture, Italian silk upholstery, all in shades of beige gold. The store has an art deco feel, which is very modern at the same time. The lighting has been especially imported from Reggiani s.p.a Italia. Ravi Bajaj says, “Finally we have a shop, lit up the way stores internationally are".

The LIBAS brand and its style prodigy designer Riyaz Gangji were back at their best again. The audience was awe-struck as they were enthralled with this one-of-a-kind show covering every aspect of an Indian wedding in 3 sequences starting from the bachelor’s party to sangeet and then the actual wedding.

The show was conceptualized as a ‘Bollywood musical fashion show’ with special tracks created by hit musical duo Sajid Wajid. Their special edition of music developed for the show added to the drama, style and glamour of Riyaz’s creations. The gorgeous actor Jacqueline Fernandez, was a show-stopper for this wedding show wearing Imtiaz Motiwala’s designed stunning necklace worth 5 crore.

Said Riyaz, “The collection flowed from black to beige and then ultimately to maroon. This collection is cut and styled by me and the work on each sherwani has been manually crafted by housewives from Lucknow.”

The show was well attended by an eclectic mix of Bollywood personalities like Sonu Nigam, Aditya Pancholi and his children, Vaishali Desai, Kishan Kumar, Rajvir, Hemant Shah, Shawar Ali, Sonal Chauhan, Priyanka Kothari & others.

With multiple avenues as myriad as diverse emotions, the students expressed what they felt was closest to their heart, just like man has forever been on a quest to express his emotions. The graduating designers worked on expressing their varied emotions in a specific form to create their extravagant creations. The show eulogized the “sprouting of joy and heart breaks into a happy song” and “Romance in the Indian wear” and “desire for the ghagra choli collection.”

Archana Kochhar said she was surprised to see the excellent designs especially the bridal wear and found the designs very novel. He wishes he had a 30 hour day to accommodate all the things that he wants to accomplish in life. He is an ambitious individual who is extremely passionate about everything he does. A scorpion by birth, his natural edge gives him the confidence to move ahead and excel. He works as a team leader in a BPO as well as following a modeling career. His day comprises of office, gym, auditions and countless other obligations.

He has been in the modeling field for a little over 6 months and hopes to follow it as a full time career. His work includes shoots for FNL magazine and Monte Carlo. Soon you will also see him in a film feature called “Shaadi Mubarak Ho” staring Ranvir Singh and Anushka Sharma. He believes that modeling is an essential step which helps a person to become more confident and camera friendly for his transition into Bollywood.

Let us introduce you to Ankit Gupta a budding and ambitious 21 year old model.

Family and Academics…
Well I was born and brought up in Noida and I live here with my family even now. Apart from my mom and dad I have an elder brother in the family. My dad’s a businessman and my bro works for an MNC. As of now I’m working as a Team Leader in a BPO.

Parent’s reaction to your choice of modeling as a career…
My parents didn’t quiet agree to my following modeling as a career in the beginning. However as I’m supporting myself with a lucrative job as well, they agreed to let me follow this field.

First modeling assignment…
Actually my first step in this field was initiated with my winning the IBIBO Eye Hunk Contest in July in 2009. After which I got signed up with elite.

Greatest achievement till date…
Professionally there is still a lot left to achieve but I’ll say that winning the IBIBO contest which had 80,000 people competing for it was quite an achievement. Personally, I’ll say that at an age of just 21, I am a team leader in my field and am able to support myself quiet handsomely along with a budding career in modeling as well is an achievement.

Idea of an ideal date
Well I’m not the kind of romantic to dwell on ideal dates and technically I hardly have time for dates after my job and my modeling.

When not modeling what are you most likely to be found doing…
When I’m not working, I like to catch up on my sleep which at times is really elusive with all the work. I can sleep for hours on end. I think my personal best is a continuous stretch of 38 hrs of sleep at one go!!

Apart from the sleeping, I love to surf and hang out with friends in my free time.

Essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…

  • Networking
  • Good height
  • Nice physic
  • Confidence

Views on Indian vs. Western models…
As far as the physical make up goes, Indian and western models are completely different. Typically Indian designers need bulkier models to showcase their designs. However western models are more apt with their skinny physic to showcase the designs of the western fraternity.

He is the one representing India as the winner for the IT’S MY TIME Global Casting by Benetton. While in college, some friends and cousins suggested modeling for him. But his college was in Kolhapur (Sumit has done Bachelors in Ayurved, Medicine & Surgery) and he knew that he needed to be in Mumbai for that. So he opted for an internship from Mumbai. During those days, a guy from FTV gave him his card at a party. Sumit called him up after he completed his internship, was given a few contact numbers, got his folio shot and he was on!!! Fashionfad.in catches him for an exclusive interview to share his experiences from New York where he is busy shooting for the United Colors of Benetton.

Family and Academics…
I did my schooling in Kashmir & actually, I was an above average student. However, just the thought of Mathematics was enough to scare the pants off me. I was really bad at the subject  :).

On the other side, I would devote most of my time to sports & yeah, bunked my school a number of times to watch the morning movie shows. I had a group of friends who would make it a point to watch the new releases, first day first show!!! And when I was in my primary school, I went to play a cricket match after school without telling my Mom & that evening, I got a nice long hearing from her. The next day, we were made to stand before the morning assembly. So I did have a lot of adventures throughout my school days ;)

Overall, my family was supportive of everything that I would do as long as I managed to get good grades.

Fashion to you…
Fashion, to me is a way. A way in which everyone carries themselves off, with or without clothes. I think Clothes are over rated in relation to fashion. I mean, they are important but someone could be really fashionable with just a glint in their eye or for that matter, without it!!

Changes in Indian Fashion Scene…
Well, the fashion industry may have gone through a sea change very quickly but fashion per se, is still pretty orthodox in India. Just to give one example, people(guys) were wary of sporting Pink till a few years ago & still, most of them wouldn’t want to wear a Purple or certain other colors for fear of being called ‘girlie’. I fail to understand people who judge others by the color they are wearing!! The general idea here is, colors are meant for girls. So girls can have all possible colors in bottoms, but guys have to stick to the conventional Black, Blue Or maybe Brown. Similarly, they have a static opinion on what the cut or length or width should be. Oh come on!! Who gets to decide what is “good”  or “bad”, what is “chic” or “shoddy”?!!! If people get rid of this mental block, the fashion scene will actually get transformed.

Your reaction on getting selected…
I remember it was around 5 in the morning & I was chatting with two friends who I’d met with during the contest. As soon as I was given the news by one of them, I was totally  ecstatic!!!  I was really, really, super, duper happy at that moment!!! First I called up  a few friends  & my sister, & after speaking to them, I played the song ‘New York’ by U2 & started singing along.  Damn!! Did that feel good or what!!! :))

Your experience at the Benetton photoshoot…
It was the best shoot I’ve ever been at!! Shooting for Benetton, with an ace photographer, that too in New York with an awesome bunch of co-winners—it was just perfect!!!

First day at the shoot, it was solo shots. So while a few people were being shot & getting ready, the others would get interviewed by the media from across the world, or get pictures clicked with them.  And through all this, we would keep ourselves entertained by having loads of backstage fun. Impromptu dances, mock catwalks, singing songs together at the top of our voice, interviewing each other with our Flipcams(Every winner was Fed-Exed a Flipcam to capture moments in their country & while in NY), or just pulling someone’s leg. The studio where we shot(Industria Superstudio) was really huge. So we had these different zones  across it with different activities going on, and we were welcome to join in anywhere. At the end of it all, it felt like we had known each other for years, coz we had such unabashed fun!!!

I had checked out Josh Olins’ profile online while I was still in India & was  so much in awe of him, I was just counting the days till I finally met him. Incidentally, I was the first  winner to meet him, that too just randomly on a Manhattan street.

And the actual shoot, it was an absolute pleasure working with Josh Olins. He’s the most chilled out photographer I’ve ever met. He was singing along & dancing to the music being played, while he was clicking pictures!! And needless to say, the pictures that came out were simply mindblowing!!!

Views on the modeling industry…
Modeling industry abroad works in a more systematic way. There are no confusions regarding the casting, payments, schedules & other such matters. Sadly enough, inspite of the progress that Indian modeling scene has undergone, there’re still lots of issues that need to be addressed.

Sumit Patwari as a person…
The one thing that comprises the most essential part of me is music. Its there in my head all the time, even while I’m talking or doing something else. At times, my hands or feet keep playing these random rhythms, to some known or unknown tune which is playing in my head. Its just impossible for me to get it out of my system, & I don’t even want to. I think I’m blessed to be built that way, coz that makes me happy. :)

I like all kinds of music, except Rap & Death Metal. Some of my favorites are Jeff Buckley, Foo Fighters, A R Rahman, Nirvana, Junoon, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin.

Favourite Indian designers…
Arjun Khanna & Narendra Ahmad, coz their stuff is sleek, stylish & something I would love to wear.
Views on the future of fashion in India…

The future of fashion in India seems to be in safe hands, with a good mix of experienced, as well as young designers. Besides, the fashion weeks are bringing in a lot of international buyers & it can only get better from here.

Your future plans and goals…
I don’t have any plans as such for the future coz I believe that ‘Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.’ I live life in phases and different things could dominate such different phases: There was a time when I was playing in a band, working in a hospital, acting in a play—and it was never planned!! So the idea is to enjoy the journey instead of looking for a comfortable destination.

Idea of an ideal date…
Hmmmmm….For me, it’s more about the ‘person’ than the ‘date’. If I really like the girl I’m with, then the place, conditions, food etc. is mere icing for the cake ;)

Essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…

  • Confidence
  • Fun
  • Individuality
  • Adventure
  • A sense of abandon.

Most touching moment of your life…

I was playing at a friend’s place & his mom suddenly asked me my Dad’s phone number. I asked her why & she said, “So that I can adopt you & have you play your music for me everyday.” I was really touched!!

Any social cause or social issue that has stirred…
Lack of medical care for the poor. For the last 6 months, I’ve been working for Wockhardt Foundation. I travel with a Van every morning, go to different slums on designated days & treat the patients there on an OPD basis for free.

SNIPPETS

FAVORITE FOOD: Mughlai. I like spicy food & lots of sweets too :)

FAVORITE PERFUME: Azzaro Chrome, CK.

FAVORITE DESIGNER: Giorgio Armani.

FAVORITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION: Goa, Spain.

FAVOURITE MUSIC: Alternative rock, Grunge, anything with a melody!!

GREATEST FEAR: That I’ll lose my hearing power!!
