Thriller Jacket under hammer
The red and black jacket of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson which he famously wore in his ‘Thriller’ video will be auctioned at the event on June 25 and 26 at Julien’s Auction in Beverly Hills.
The classic piece of the late music sensation will be featured along with several other pieces, including a bedazzled glove and one of his wigs. The jacket is expected to fetch between $200K and $400K. The jacket became part of Jackson’s look for a decade and served as the inspiration for 1980’s fashion craze like none other. Before he died in 2009, Jackson gave the jacket to his two wardrobe designers, Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. The sleeve is signed and the lining has the inscription: "To Bush and Dennis, All My Love, Michael Jackson."
The auction will feature over 600 collectibles from pop music’s pantheon, including The Beatles, Madonna and Elvis Presley, as well as more recent sensations such as Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.
Items on the block range from a pair of sneakers signed by Britney Spears to a luxury car owned by Frank Sinatra. There is also a stage that Jimi Hendrix played on, part of a guitar that was smashed by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and handwritten lyrics for songs by Johnny Cash.
Barbaric Barbie
Mattel, the makers of the cult toy; Barbie is under scanner for unethical trade practices costing environment heavily. A news report from Greenpeace revealed that one of the world’s most famous toymaker’s packaging results in the deforestation of Indonesia’s threatened rainforests.
A prominent campaign being run by Greenpeace states that the Los Angeles based, Mattel sources the packaging material from the suppliers which derives wood by logging the rainforests which are home to endangered species like Orangutans and Sumatran Tigers. Meanwhile Mattel has assured to look into the matter and directed its suppliers to stop sourcing from Sinar Mas/APP. Seeing the blaze of detestation, Mattel has shut down its Barbie page on facebook and went silent on Twitter.
Amidst the rounds of allegations and defense, Greenpeace aired a video saying that Ken dumped Barbie due to her desire to "wrap herself in cheaper packaging" that was produced through logging of rainforests in Sumatra. Greenpeace activists dressed as Ken dolls abseiled down the side of Mattel’s to unfurl a banner saying Barbie packaging contributes to rainforest destruction.
The massive pink-and-blue sign on the Mattel building in El Segundo, outside Los Angeles, featured a frowning Ken declaring: "Barbie, it’s over. I don’t date girls that are into deforestation." The demonstration also included a protester dressed as Barbie driving a glossy pink bulldozer in circles and carrying copies of the group’s charges against Mattel to its 1,500 Los Angeles-area employees.
Greenpeace said its Los Angeles activities marked the start of a worldwide campaign to stop toy companies driving deforestation in Indonesia, which according to the group has one of the fastest rates of forest destruction in the world.
Florence Welch for North American Tour
Gucci is pleased to dress singer/songwriter Florence Welch for the North American tour of Florence and the Machine this summer in a wardrobe of outfits designed by Creative Director Frida Giannini.
Giannini said, “When Florence first came onto the scene, I was captivated by her eccentric style and her willingness to dare. I felt there was such an authentic energy to her sound and her look. This was confirmed when I met her at the Grammys earlier this year. I used one of Florence’s songs, ‘Hurricane Drunk,’ to set the mood for my Autumn Winter women’s show, as she was truly an inspiration for this collection as a modern day icon with her cinematic allure and powerful presence.”
Welch added, “I was extremely flattered when I heard that Frida’s collection had been inspired in part by my performances and I was completely bowled over by her collection, the dresses seemed perfect for my shows, the colours, the shapes, the movement in the fabric. So it seemed natural that we work together on creating some pieces for my upcoming US tour. I’m very grateful to Frida, it’s been a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to get dressed for the stage!”
