Sabah Mansoor Husain, of Bangalore, India, entered the Academy of Art University for her MFA degree in Fashion and Knitwear Design, after receiving her BA degree in Textile Design from Bangalore’s Srishti School of Art Design and Technology in 2005.

Sabah’s knitwear collection combines an eclectic set of techniques derived from both craft and design. She drew upon traditional methods of felting fabrics, crochet, hand embroidery and Shibori (a Japanese technique of dyeing a pattern which begins with binding, stitching, folding, twisting and compressing fabric); Sabah incorporated these first steps of Shibori to manipulate the fabrics and enhance the sculptural textures in her collection.

Commissioned beads and crystals:
Inspired by chandeliers, Sabah worked with an artisan in Firozabad, India to customize the jewel-shaped crystals and faceted glass beads she used to embellish to her entirely black and charcoal collection.

The use of ‘felting’:
“I learned how to create felt from artist Tenzin Yang, a woman who makes felt hats and bags in a small shop in Darjeeling, India. When I began developing my collection, I remembered her patience in teaching me the process she had such passion for – a process that had been passed down through generations in her family…I would love to see her reaction to my collection; sadly do not have contact with me anymore.”

Sabah’s experience commissioning the beads and crystals:
“When I began working on my collection, a search for the right materials led me on an interesting exploration. I wanted to use a jewel component; however, I was not satisfied with the size and scale of the crystals available at local stores. I searched shops and salvage yards for crystal chandeliers, yet didn’t find the colors and quantities that I needed. Since I grew up in India, and started my design career in the textile industry, I had heard about factories and artisans who created faceted glass beads and bangles in a small city called Firozabad, located within the state of Uttar Pradesh. I traveled there and discovered a small workshop run by a gentleman, Ahmed Farouq. He agreed to work with me and together we designed the pieces from scratch; he even taught me how to facet glass and make it shine like crystal. In a gesture that seems to speak of the importance of his craft and the personal dedication to his work, Mr. Farouq made the trip from Firozabad to Bangalore in order to work on the final product and hand-deliver the finished pieces to me.”

Sabah’s education in textiles and her career in design began in her hometown of Bangalore, India. Her Fall 2010 collection is evidence of her knowledge of, and appreciation for, the traditional handcrafts and skill for which India is renowned. The collection also reflects Sabah’s keen sense of sculptural shape and design. In reference to the collection, she states, “I used the centuries-old traditions of knit and felt techniques to expand conceptual boundaries between art, craft and design. I drew strongly upon the traditional techniques of felting, Shibori and hand-embroidery to act as ‘resists’, and I combined wet-felting with knitted fabric to purposefully create surfaces that marry these techniques and yet, are not defined by either”.

In 2005 Sabah developed a project using two distinct and separate methods; she created unique surfaces by molding fabric around copper shapes, and made a knit ‘light-up’ by weaving optic fibers together to create the ‘fabric’.

She also launched a footwear and handbag design company, Peach Cobbler, which also produced accessories for other designers based in India.

Meet Viraf Pheroz Patel, who denounces the world of modeling after a flourishing catwalking career and perfectly fits in the shoes of an actor, anchor, DJ and many more. Born on the 12th of June, 1980 this Gemini guy had dreams to achieve a lot of things but certainly not an actor or model. But as destiny had laid for him, he is here yet his creative quest and the sailor at his heart let him out on an unknown voyage at an early age of 20 and he is still meddling with his camera.

Viraf adds with a wink, “Hmmm… Interesting! Is probably what girls say at the first instance. I have this tendency to keep them guessing or speculating. May be it’s my mechanism of getting to know them while they are making judgments about me or maybe it’s just a Gemini trait!” So girls keep guessing and speculating even more

Family and Academics…
Born and brought up in a Parsi colony based in Pune – I couldn’t have asked for more! I have grown up amongst fine food, people, friends, loving parents and two very supportive brothers, one is Minocher 12 years senior to me and the other, Farhad who is 9 years senior to me – yes so I am the kid brother. Studied in a Parsi school too called Sardar Dastur Schools.

Parent’s reaction to your choice of modeling as a career…
Worried initially but my brothers played a major role in pacifying them and supporting me with the move of joining modeling after spending 5 years in the merchant navy.

First modeling assignment…
My first amateurish assignment was for a local brand from Pune called threadz t- shirts. Sometime in 2003. Got paid 2500 for the shoot as I was a newcomer. My first professional engagement in Advertising, after winning the title was for Panatloons outdoor campaign in april 2005 followed and in ramp was Kingfisher fashion awards 2005- walked for Prasad Bidapa.

Greatest achievement till date…
Title of Grasim Mr. India in 2005 – simply because it made my parents proud of me & happy nothing else.

Idea of an ideal date
Moi playing fab cook, great listener, soft music and a talented coffee maker to top it all off – It can’t fail ?

When not modeling what are you most likely to be found doing…
I am indulging my creative senses in various avenues such as Photography, writing, learning a musical instrument et al.

Five essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…
To understand and develop a sense of :-
• Professionalism – for people to enjoy working with you
• Grooming – for people to tolerate you at close quarters
• Holistic fitness – (yoga, swimming, gym, healthy diet) to not look like a stiff pack of muscles who can’t emote
• Character & grit – to introspect and take decisions out of choice and not lack of awareness
• Psychological & emotional strength – to deal with rejection, trying & tempting situations.

Views on Indian vs. Western models…
Indian models such as Diana Penty have managed to break through, but there’s no doubt that Indian models are not part of mainstream modeling abroad. It will take a few years before that can happen. A major reason for even this slight change is because of the large diaspora, and in the years to come, this is bound to increase.

The most touching moment of your life…
Holding my new born nephew Parvez for the first time when i 16 !!

Men are equally confused when it comes to dressing for an occasion and equally demanding in terms of latest offering from fashion and style. We are not talking about the metrosexual as we denounce any concepts of class differentiation based on concern for style. It’s universal for anyone to be concerned about their looks and appearance and this particular nomenclature was absolutely not required. Non-the-less the spring is here and time is ripe to throw away the blankets and get ready for the warm sun bath. Fashionfad.in enhances the style direction for the ever so stylish men this season.

The cool factor! : Its summer dude and we want something that’s comfortable and oh! so stylish. The cotton white shirt is the classic way to get it cool and Aslam Khan precedes fashion with his pin-tucked white shirt in mandarin collar. The little embroidery detail just above the pockets on the chest takes care of the minute attention of style. It is matched with peach trouser with patch pockets. The pockets seem to converge all the attention this season. Abhishek Gupta and Nandita Basu style for comfort in an ochre t-shirt with bike tessellation print matched with a straight fight relaxed trouser. The t-shirt from Nitin Bal Chauhan has a juxtaposition of tie prints worn over an extremely low waist trouser in horizontal stripes with suspenders hanging loose. And the Siddharth Tytler here flaunts an asymmetric dhoti pants in a rose motif styled with a coffee brown chest revealing sleeveless t-shirt.

Born to Party:The party has much more fun this summer with teddy boys in western and tall kurtas in Indian outfits. Ashish N Soni dress it the perfect Edwardian in black pinstriped coat and white shirt upturns the cuffs with rose reliefs, the jacket has slim silk lapels and is complimented with a bow tie and a chocolate brown lurex trousers. Manoviraj Khosla has yet again brought back the one buttoned jacket but this time in off white with grey piping and shadow prints worn over the mono-basic grey trouser which expels ultimate style. The prints that are ruling fashion find their escape sometimes in the trousers and sometimes in the jackets. Ravi Bajaj shifts the muted paisley print to the trouser and compliments it with a powdery cream safari stylized jacket. Vallaya again has a black wool jacket sans button with contrast piping and a heavy drape trouser. The ethnic Indian kurtas have borrowed the colour of valor and thus red adds the accent to richness of fashion as we also see Vijay Arora and Shantanu and Nikhil interpreting the same in the kurta and sherwani. And Kotwara has tall kaftan style kurta styled with block printed huge stole. The neat line of symmetry is visible in Zubair Kirmani’s charcoal kurta with illusionary checks.

Beach Lounging: The summers this season witness a shifting hemline in shorts from knee length to thigh high. The camouflage shorts by Nitin Bal Chauhan combines with a white tee sprayed with psychedelic colours. The gamcha and banyan style right off from the streets exude supreme style in Rajesh Pratap Singh’s creation. And here rises the shorts upto the thigh in beige linen with patch pockets prefixed with indigo printed loose neck tee by Rajvi Mohan. Samant Chauhan has weaved his short in luxury and comfort with raw silk shorts matched with a shirt and fashioned with a breezing jacket.

Style Ticks: Rajesh Pratap yet again creates a design marvel and adds style ticking in an overall optical illusionary warp print over jacket and Raj Kapoor length trouser. Rocky S sets the style clock with crushed kurta, batik print, knits and ikat border. Samant Chauhan has dressed the futuristic genome in silk. Studio Himmat styles the buttoned jodhpur and beige jacket matched with a multicolored turban.
