Pranay Baidya, a celebrated fashion designer who founded his eponymous label Pranay Baidya ‘in Calcutta’ upon return from New Zealand, regularly curates experiential presentations which are a homage to his Bengali roots. His latest celebration was an intimate ten course fusion Bengali luncheon, specially created by internationally renowned Chef Sujan Sarkar at the capital’s hottest new restaurant, Rooh on the occasion of Bengali New Year.

The Pranay Baidya label not only focuses on the Bride and Groom but also has expertise in a contemporary and artistic prêt line. Every design has a different story to tell and holds a designated place in the wardrobe of everyone who not only shares the grand festivities of an Indian wedding but also cherishes the everyday celebrations of life, says Pranay Baidya.

His Summer Festive collection of Sarees & Kurtas are an ode to the 18th century royal textile from Madhya Pradesh – Maheshwari. The collection titled Calcutta 1964, looks to wardrobes of heroines from Satyajit Ray’s cinema in the 1960’s. Pure zari stripes in silver and gold interplay with feminine floral prints in a refreshing summer palette of mint green, lemon yellow, powder blue, nude and ivory. “I grew up watching films like Charulata, Mahangar, Jalshaghar with my grandmother, and little did I know their cinematography and costumes would have such a lasting impression on me.

The magical Sunday afternoon was charismatically presented with beautifully incased installations showing the latest offering by the designer, which was well supplemented with rare comestibles food which made for a lilting, summery Bengali afternoon.
