From physiotherapy to modeling, life has taken drastic turns for this tall and dusky lass. Born and brought up in the sun kissed South Africa, Himarsha Venkatsamy came to Indian shores to further her modeling agenda and has not looked back since. Here fashionfad indulges in an exclusive chat with the beauty.

Tell us something about your home?
I was born and brought up in a coastal city called Durban in South Africa. I lived for many years in and out of Cape Town. It really is my favorite place in the world, more beautiful than I can describe. There is so much to do especially with outdoor activities and sport.

Tells us briefly about your family and schooling?
I am the youngest of 3 siblings. We are all very close to each other. My family is fun loving and very nurturing. My sister is my best friend, we even have matching tattoos! After high school I moved to Johannesburg to study at Wits Medical School and completed my Physiotherapy degree there.

What is your parent’s viewpoint on you choosing modeling as a career?
My parents have always been very supportive and are proud that I am happy and independent. At first they were nervous about my career change but they have always believed in me.

When and what was your first modeling assignment?
It was for a very big bank in South Africa and was actually a cricket ad film which I was the lead. They ended up using the campaign for 3 years, so that was great for me!

What all assignments have u been a part of?
In South Africa I did a show called Deal or No Deal, as well as ad films and print work, and a music video for a French band called salsedo for Euro MTV. Most of my work has been over the last 18 months in India. I have done Lakme and Wills fashion weeks, the Kingfisher Calendar as well as anchoring the Hunt for the Kingfisher Calendar Girl 2011, the music video for I Hate Love Stories with Imraan Khan, ad films, fashion campaigns and currently I am shooting a film.

How important do you think is education for a model?
I think education is an invaluable asset but unnecessary while modeling…however a modeling career is short-lived and has an expiry date so it is best to have a back up plan.

What’s your opinion of the Modeling Industry? Are substance abuse/suicides etc as predominant as depicted by the media?
Yes…it can be a very dangerous and self destructive industry that is why I think a strong sense of self is very important.

How has the industry evolved in all these years?
It has grown and evolved drastically. I feel it has also become more dynamic and lucrative.

I train 4 to 5 times a week. I love to road run and swim and combine that with gym sessions.

I love good products!!! Basic daily regime, facials monthly and healthy nutritious diet together with rest and happiness
