Siddartha Tytler marking his debut at the Summer/Resort 2011, Lakme India Fashion Week, Mumbai, previewed his collection labelled ‘Metalosophy’ The Deck at Circa 1193, Qutub Mehrauli.

The Greek believed that word "Philosophy" stems from the "love of wisdom”; when fused with the term Metal, that which personifies meticulous structure, a sense of everlasting resilience and a bonding of various elements, the result is an astute noun that defines a genre that is yet to be delved into by many especially in the world of fashion.

The compilation masterfully conducts the fusion of Tytler’s signature genius, flawlessly, into garments flaunting immense structural appeal, shades of metallic brilliance and dazzling embellishment techniques culled from scrupulously fashioned lengths of fabric – The Signature being a hint of metal either dans l’élément et/ou en couleur (in element and/or in colour)  in every garment.

Luxurious Jersey French Chiffons, tastefully embroidered georgettes, yards of chic silk spandex, daring-shimmer-bearing lengths of Lamé and mounds of lavishly light Duchess Satin ‘stick to fit or simply flare when required’ into stunning demurely draped silhouettes. There is bold use of sheeting, negative sheeting, crystal embellishments and appliqué work form iconic bonds with his new found technique ‘Metal Mosaic’ – A faultless unification of numerous metallic shaded crystals, in varied shapes and sizes, fused together with chain mail and or crystal mesh and or embroidery to form a pattern resembling the inner part of a machine.

‘I love Hitler’ John Galliano

The storied French label Christian Dior said Tuesday, 2nd March; it was firing the zany British bad boy John Galliano for his anti-Semitic incident. The news comes quite as shock and has thrown me quite in a state of perplex and indecisiveness to what is more disturbing. Is it the end of John Galliano’s career that is more saddening or his unprecedented behavior more shocking?

The facts state that Dior announced it had suspended Galliano following his arrest over an alleged anti-Semitic assault in a Paris bar. The same day, Paris-based citizen journalism site Citizenside received a video of Galliano (which immediately went viral) on a drunken, anti-Semitic rant in the same bar the previous December. In the video Galliano hurls anti-Semitic insults at a group of Italian women and declares “I love Hitler… People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers would all be fucking gassed.” This incident has happened just before Paris Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter 2011/2012. Following the decision Dior said it still planned to go ahead with its Galliano-designed fall-winter 2011-12 collection on Friday as part of Paris fashion week.

Making anti-Semitic remarks can bring up to six months in prison in France, and Galliano appeared in a Paris police station Monday to face the accusations against him.

Natalie Portman, an Oscar-winning Jewish actress whose great-grandparents died in Auschwitz, had an endorsement contract with Dior for its Miss Dior Cherie fragrance. In a statement, she expressed “disgust” at John Galliano’s anti-Semitic comments. Portman said: “I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today…I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

Not everyone in the fashion industry, however, shared Portman’s “disgust.” Stylist and costume designer Patricia Field went all out defending Galliano by sending an email blast to 500 friends, blogs and media. She dismissed Galliano’s anti-Semitic rants as “theater” and later, in a phone interview with WWD described Galliano’s videotaped behavior as “farce” and said she was bewildered that people in the fashion community have not recognized it as such. “It’s theater,” she said. “It’s farce. But people in fashion don’t recognize the farce in it. All of a sudden they don’t know him. But it’s OK when it’s Mel Brooks’ ‘The Producers’ singing Springtime for Hitler.”

Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI said, “I would like to congratulate Neeru Kumar for opening the show. She will be showcasing her collection at a fashion week for the first time, and we are indeed very proud to have her on board at WIFW”.

Neeru’s work is described as the collectable antiques of the future. And her experiments with traditional textile processes, whether in Kantha, khadi, jamdani, ikat or jacquard and treadle weaving demonstrates the critical importance which brings the technique itself in new life and energy.

With luscious colours and luxurious textures, Jatin Varma’s latest collection of evening and resort wear plans to be more than the flavour of the season. Aptly titled “Gelato” Jatin Varma’s Summer/Resort 2011 line will be unveiled at Lakme Fashion Week, at his runway show held on March 12th.

This stand-out collection is inspired by the famous Italian Gelato, its exclusive flavours, light texture and vibrant sorbet shades.   Gelato’s fresh and rich colours are a visual delight featuring melon pink, black current shaded blue, lemon white and a juicy apricot yellow. Jatin Varma has chosen rich silk organza and silk taffeta fabrics to play with structure and various forms of draping.

Light and summery, the drapes and layers are combined with fitted and full circle skirts, adding subtle playfulness to these flirty, feminine pieces. The blend of colour blocking a pleating has resulted in fusing gracefulness and style with spunk and creativity, in a collection of short edgy dresses and red carpet evening gowns.
