Celebrating womanhood with its latest bridal collection under the label of Vinayak Couture, it encompasses the joyous mood of the bride during the different ceremonies of marriage. The glittering fashion show was held at Darbar Hall, Taj Palace, Padmashree Dr. Shyama Chona graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Education Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely was the Chief Guest at the event. The evening also had a special performance by students of Tamana (An NGO of Dr Shyama Chona) walking the ramp and an electrifying performance by Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champ Diwakar Sharma.

Incorporating traditional colours of royal reds, fiery fuchsias, graceful greens, ornate oranges, pretty peaches, glittery golds along with contemporary sea greens, willowy wines, violets, various shades of blue and mulberries provide a colourful pallete to suit every need of the bride. The Strength of Vinayak lies in combining the rich textiles of India like khinkhabs, pure brocades, pure silk, delicate nets, shimmery tissues, metallic fabrics along with the rich Indian handcrafted embroidery.

The interweaving of metal sheets, pearls, semi precious stones, zircons with a diamante of colours and shapes, Swarovski cystals, gold wires transcend the fabric into beautiful embroideries. The use of pure zaris, woven into georgettes is another innovation by the brand. Wispy cutworks incorporated with the embroideries with a contrast silk peeking from underneath gives a delightful image.

Speaking on the occasion the designer behind Vinayak, Gautam Gupta said, ““This show is dedicated to my parents Late Shri Ram Prakash Gupta & Mrs Asha rani Gupta. I will always be a learner in the world of fashion as I am not a qualified designer. Whatever talent & determination has gone behind putting up a show this evening is inherited from my parents. Hope the collection is worth the promise. The entire team of VINAYAK now takes the 12 years of legacy forward. I am just heading the team with a vision to globalize VINAYAK.”

Shop for Change Fair Trade, a Section 25 not-for-profit company that promotes the concept of fair trade in India, collaborated with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Mumbai to give student designers an opportunity of a lifetime to make a difference for cotton farmers while making a splash in the fashion world.

Encouraging new and upcoming talent to see the benefits of fair trade for farmers and the fashion industry, Shop for Change provided NIFT design students with Shop for Change Fair Trade certified cotton fabric to create a collection of Women’s Indian wear garments. The collection was showcased at a glamorous fashion show hosted at Valhalla, Churchgate.

An esteemed panel of judges, which included designer and Shop for Change partner Anita Dongre, ace photographer Vikram Bawa, and the talented designer Masaba Gupta, selected a winning design at this NextGEN event.  Ace designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed was also present to support Shop for Change and the young student designers.  Siddharth Kannan, the event’s emcee, had the audience in splits with his witty remarks throughout the afternoon.

Commenting on this collaboration, Rebecca Philip, Center Coordinator for Fashion Design at NIFT Mumbai said, “NIFT has always believed in not just educating its students on fashion design and technology but imparting them with a holistic knowledge of their surroundings as well. We take our students on frequent industry visits to make them aware of the sources of their material. Our collaboration with Shop for Change is a step towards making them socially conscious designers who work towards the betterment of the society.”

The Shop for Change certified cotton in the fabric used by the NIFT students is sourced from Chetna Organic Agriculture Producer Company and converted into fabric by West End Fashions and Rajlakshmi Cotton Mills.  The models were provided with hair and make-up by India’s premier make up and design studio Fat Mu, which is committed to providing young makeup artists a stepping-stone into the world of fashion.  Support for the event came from European Union sponsored PROSUSTAIN project, a collaboration between Shop for Change, International Resources for Fairer Trade, Fair Trade Forum, and Hivos.

Jointly presenting, two of country’s fastest growing designers Anupama Dayal and Dev R Nil at Bridal Asia 2010, Divya Gurwara, CEO, Bridal Asia and yoga exponent Nisha Singh came together to host a cocktail evening at Veda, DLF Promenade to talk about the wedding trends.

It is the Bronze Begum by Anupama Dayal and Naya/Notun by Dev r Nil were the talk of the evening. Anupama’s debut foray into the bridal wear via Bridal Asia has been much anticipated. Knowing that the centuries old crafts needs to be constantly re-interpreted into contemporary, her research has been exhaustive and has made her travel and study the various cultures of weaving and workmanship across the country. Her bride is the multicultural, free spirit, who is now ready for a more refined expression of design and heritage. As she puts it, “these are clothes for the living, to conquer hearts, to dance to celebrate life. And as I have always believed beautiful clothes deserve to be worn again and again till you pass them on to the next generation.”

Kolkata boys Dev & Nil have established themselves as master couturiers. Talking about their foray into bridal they say, “It’s an opportunity to widen our base and interact directly to Delhi & North consumers. Notun is a collection of old Bong ideas in a new format of styles, designs and thought processes.” An amalgamation of chanderi, mugas, kahddi, dupion, georgette and ombre chiffon along with fine Bengali karigari of threads, beads, kasaps and dabkas put all in a fresh, Notun perspective.

Having just got over with the Couture Week in Delhi, I was still left with the thirst for more that could be mouthwatering fashion, when I came across these series of pictures. Here photographer Fulvio Bonavia transformed some of our favorite accessories with fruit, cheese and chocolate among other for his photo book "A Matter of Taste".

‘A Matter of Taste’ is an interesting exploration between our need to satiate our hunger. On a purely aesthetic level, however, Fulvio Bonavia has created a must-have art book. The most improbable that all the tasty accessories of Fulvio Bonavia – are real! Author by his own hands made models from food for each shot. Unfortunately, all his creations were too short-lived, but the items captured in photos are the work of human hands, not of the ubiquitous Photoshop. The idea of the author is: “If you do not want to eat it – wear it!” Pictures excite taste buds and sense of style.
