Nakul Sen, a designer who sees fashion beyond the clothes. He personifies a person completely in love with art, music, food, traveling and much more minor idiosyncrasies of life than the cocktail gowns he has been designing since 1997. His label, which is visible in 78 boutiques across the world came to India in 2006, is dedicated to designing exquisite evening wear and jewels. He had started his career as a sales boy in a Benetton store at a young age of seventeen and is a designer who went international before becoming national.

Back in 1995, Nakul was designing costumes for theatres in New York where he gradually fell in love with garments and landed up becoming a fashion designer. Ask Nakul about his design inspirations and he lightheartedly jokes, “its money that inspires me to keep doing fashion. Don’t you think that you are more comfortable in your basic pair of denims and casual cotton tees, go and try one of the designer outfits and you won’t feel the same.”

Nakul Sen Inc. puts forward the statement by giving designs a contemp -orary twist to the Indian craftsmanship but with an appeal to the international tastes and has its offices in Milan, London, and Barcelona. With an active participation in prestigious exhibition in Madrid and Paris, the brand has been featured in abounding publications like French Marie Clare, Italian Official, French Gala, Playboy, etc not to forget the Tyra Bank show in 1997, New York, featuring America’s 10 super models which leaped Nakul Sen from behind the scene to the streets of New York Fashion world. “It is the most memorable moment of my life when fourteen big hoardings flashed all over the New York city, of supermodels wearing my creations”, ponders Nakul.

Nakul together with wife Christina Chingakham has recently launched O Palacio, an amalgamation of their passion and interests that unites fashion art and food in Delhi. The canopy also brings the first Portuguese restaurant in the city. Nakul and Christina who have always been drawn to quaint little towns, stand in the middle of the road to hear a melodious tunes coming from a far end corner. They enjoyed a eating out in simple authentic food hubs while deciding to design a place that would make them feel at home away from the uptight fashion world. He says, “Tina and I find fashion boring so we mixed it with things that we love like art, book reading, Spanish dances, music by Fado singers, play by Company theatre and the list is just too exhaustive”. He adds recalling, “O Palacio is also a pet friendly place so everyone can come in here carrying their adorable dogs and cats, but yes, you have to clean the poo that your little one creates.”

However the more he denounces the world of fashion, the industry clearly witnesses his design marvels, as his quirky costume designing in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Aks. And his latest muse, jewellery, where he has designed an array of extremely stylish cocktail rings and neck pieces of precious colored stones.
