Interestingly, Delhi has this distinct charm with its women adorned as Christmas Trees and men as bushes (whatever, it undoubtedly, houses the most fashionable people in the country). But, now when the party season is around the corner, drawers are stuffed with invites, plans and themes are being churned and shopping is the word of the season, there pops up the fashionable anxiety – What to wear? How much shimmer?

Amidst, all these hammering questions, Velvet comes as a perfect rejoinder. The subtle sheen of the fabric is assuring no fashion faux-pas this season. The runways around the world with the designers like Ralph Lauren, Burberry Prorsum, Zac Posen, Gucci, Dolce & Gabanna  are playing with the velvet in various silhouettes, colours and styles  The warm and dressy fabric with luxurious tactile feel is the cynosure of the season. But besides the regal attitude, it comes with a caution note. You must know how to wear it, what to wear it with.

When it comes to women, velvet oozes class and sophistication with super luxe feel. From crushed to burned out to ruffled velvet jackets, dresses, pants are there to be the perfect evening wear in colors like burgundy, green, gray, blue, yellow and black. Contrast it with delicate fabrics like lace and chiffon separates to get the look and accessorize it well with vintage looking accessories. The wine red crushed dress by Burberry evinces the elegance of the fabric. Whereas, the blue blazer by Ralph and Lauren when teamed with a tuxedo pant or lace skirt along with animal printed scarf can do wonders by turning into a classy cocktail wear.

The yellow velvet wonder skirt by Marc Jacobs and little black dress by Chanel are two opulent outfits exuding richness and warmth. Similarly, the burned out velvet printed outfit by Thakoon worn with simple accessories like pearls and pointed kitten heels renders ladylike look.

The understated velvet adorns a man bestowing classic vibes with oodles of ogles guaranteed. Velvet coats and sports jacket are displayed on the ramps in abundance. From Paul Smith to Dolce Gabanna to Gucci velvet is standing for classy men. Team your velvet jackets and coats in purple, black, green, gray and blue with well stitched tapered pants, loafers and a nice hand bag to get the look. Coats with velvet lapels and three piece suits ala Dolce & Gabanna turned out to be a big statement, provided you wear it with loads of attitude. Moreover, velvet accessories like slippers and bows are festive appropriate to bring a classy man out of you.

The Alika Jacket has been introduced under the JJ Valaya label. It has a limited edition run of 12 jackets per style. Iznik: Alika Edition 6 by JJ Valaya is an ode to the aesthetic excellence and detailing of Turkish ceramics. The new avatar romances subtle rhythmic floral hand embroidered motifs in an earthen color palette, perfectly reflecting the grandeur of the imperial court.

A cross between a shirt and a jacket, it loosely shares its DNA with an Indian traditional garment, the ‘Sadri’. This Jacket was born out of an urge of the designer to create something permanent in the impermanent world of fashion…to continuously adapt to the ever-changing spirit of fashion albeit, without losing its unique signature cut and salient details.

A giant glass showcase window displays the legendary Alika Jacket at JJ Valaya’s flagship store, Life at The Gallery on MG Road New Delhi exhibiting the different stages of the journey leading to the birth of the masterpiece. Iznik: Alika – Edition 6 by JJ Valaya is available on order through February 2011.

Cosmetic giant L’Oreal Paris has Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire fame featured in their 2011 global ‘Happy New Year’ commercial and surprisingly Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is absent from the same.

Aishwarya is the only International brand ambassador to be dropped from the new campaign, while the brand’s other International ambassadors include Jane Fonda, Diane Kruger, Beyoncé Knowles, Claudia Schiffer, Milla Jovovich, Patrick Dempsey, Rachel Weisz, Laeticia Casta, Evangeline Lilly and Gerard Butler are all there for the campaign. And Freida Pinto incidentally gets as much screen space as the other stars.

Freida has been constantly in the global limelight in recent times. That could be a reason. After her claim to fame role in Slumdog Millionaire, which propelled her to global stardom, she was spotted in Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger and Julian Schnabel’s Miral. She now looks forward to Immortals, co- starring Mickey Rourke and Black Thirst with Antonio Banderas.

Innocence coupled with wayward streaks define effervescent, Rhea Gupte. Innately bugged by the fashion, Rhea hit it off with the camera when she was merely 16. Now, pursuing her Fashion Communications from NIFT, Bangalore, she sees herself running her own clothing line, writing, eating, loving and praying fashion 10 years down the line.

Tell us briefly about your formative years and academics?
I did my schooling from Swami Vivekanand High school. I opted for arts after my 10th and was studying in St. Xaviers College. Currently, I am pursuing Fashion Communication from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore.

How you bumped into your first assignment? How it changed your life?
I bumped on my very first assignment when I was 16. It was for L’Oreal hair salon called Tress talk. It didn’t really change my life as such. But, it definitely got me interested in modeling.

What did you aspire to become as kid?
Even as a kid I was very fond of fashion. I wouldn’t let anyone touch my wardrobe which used to be arranged to perfection. So I was pretty sure of doing something in the fashion industry.

Modeling comes with a short shelf life so where do you see yourself 10 years do wn the line?
I see myself having my own line of clothing and writing.

Where do you see yourself in this cut throat competitive industry? What’s your success mantra?
I believe in being positive and competing with myself, for that helps me be the best I can be. I am very hard working and as my sun sign being Virgo, I’m a perfectionist.

What’s your take on drug abuse and suicides which are so prevalent in the modeling industry?
I think one shouldn’t be swayed away with all the glitz and glamour. Being rooted helps to keep that much needed balance in life. Also, one should spend enough time with close friends and family. People who give you positive energy.

Which projects have you graced with your presence?
I recently did a print ad for Titan Eyewear, a commercial for Tata Docomo, several episodes of MTV Style Check besides walking the ramp for the likes Neetu Gupta, Roopa Pemmaraju who is an Australia based designer and many more.

How has been your experience with the modeling?
I think the Indian Modeling industry is great. By far I have had only good experiences working here. Internationally, models predominantly work with agencies, which is not always the case here, the agency takes care of all their needs.

How is Rhea as a person? What does she like to do when not modeling?
I am a warm, positive, adventurous and ambitious. I like to write, read, sketch, swim, shop and work on my fashion blog.

Which is the most cherished moment in your modeling career?
I recently won the title of second runner up in the Miss Bangalore beauty pageant and the subtitle of Miss Catwalk.

What’s your beauty and fitness regime?
I wash my face twice a day. I run, swim and dance to keep fit.

What is your idea of an ideal date?
A stroll on the beach or a nice dinner.

What’s your style statement?
I would describe my style as rocker chic, lots of black and metal.

The Gossip Girl star Blake Lively has recently been announced the official Chanel’s Ambassadress for the yet to be launched Mademoiselle Handbag Line.

The 23 years old American actress will appear in a sensually arresting campaign photographed by Karl Lagerfeld in the coming months. The grapevine flying around the fashion circles for last one month about Blake Lively joining soon the exclusive club Chanel girls like Keira Knightely, Audrey Tautou, Vanessa Paradis and Georgia May Jagger soon materialized when the news was confirmed officially by Chanel.

If the sources are to be believed then Blake and Karl met each other during Couture Fashion Week last year in July and since then Blake was seen wearing Chanel outfits on the red carpet repeatedly.
