In a world when designers find it hard to manage between creativity and innovativeness, designer Gurpreet Pia Fleming has managed to strike the right chord. She embarked on her career in fashion after graduating from the 1st nominated class of National Institute of Technology (NIFT), New Delhi at its inception. Under the charismatic guidance of Dean Streiter (the Dean of FIT who helped establish NIFT in India), she traveled to New York to study, to further strengthen her knowledge in fashion at FIT. Pia apprenticed at Tommy Hilfiger and Nordstroms. She then launched her line of accessories in 2002 in New York called BIAN (which deciphers ‘Mysterious’ in Vietnamese). Soon after, she participated in the Toronto Fashion Week and introduced her contemporary design collection BIAN which stole the limelight and soon she was a hotcake in the fashion industry. Aesthetic, sharp and contemporary clothes are what one can always expect from Pia’s stable. Her collection always strives to define a woman with a sense of purpose, sensuality, accomplishment, love and ambition. BIAN was introduced in India in the year of 2006 at the opening of her flagship store in the destination shopping area in Lodi Colony (New Delhi). The juxtaposition of old and new is what appeals to the fashionistas these days and she very well tries to imbibe this thought in her clothes. She combines the ancient aesthetic of Indian craftsmanship with her own inimitable spin, creating beautiful modern pieces that are utterly wearable.

In the last few years BIAN has become a brand name in the Middle East, Australia and Japan, and scores of boutiques in the US carry the line. Fleming has now a flagship store in Delhi, and is involved with all the Fashion Week carnivals in place in India. She has certainly paid her dues and shows how fashion careers are going full circle globally.
