Model to choreography to compeering to grooming, Mehar Bhasin is a woman with many hats. Mellow yet raspy, she exudes unparalleled grit and substance. Be it her sharp rejoinders or abyss of fashion intellect, the fashion guru, Mehar appliqué-s her beauty by brain and oodles of attitude and style. Having scorched the runways of fashion for over a decade she was the first Indian to model for Revlon with Cindy Crawford.

Now running a grooming academy, Mehar knows the art of carving the destiny in her words. We interacted with her over fashion and modeling, and she put Mehar as a person forth, unhesitantly.

What is fashion for you?
Fashion is something that I am most comfortable in and what suits me best.

How is Mehar as a person, which books do you read, which music you enjoy and all that comprises the most essential part of you?
Mehar is independent and fun loving yet very grounded person. I love traveling to exotic places and interacting with new people. About books, then I read anything that I take a fancy of – Jeffery Archer, Lee Child, Brian Weiss etc. Talking about music then I like House music most.

How about Indian modeling industry and industry abroad and what has it grown from?
Indian Modeling Industry is still growing and not at all professional in any manner. Just few who are there are still there. For a fresh start may just two add up each year. Whereas, Industry abroad is way ahead of  the Indian market. They are recognized world over and Indian guys are sadly just stuck within the country and bollywood. If, what it has grown from, and all this is talked about, then I must say it has grown from nothing really but it is remarkable to where it stands today.

Tell us something about your story backstage with choreographers and other models who put together such a picture perfect show?
Backstage is pure madness but a great fun. Those last minute touch ups, stitching, ironing zips and heels breaking at the very final moment, it’s filled with jitters, anxiety and excitement. And now that I also choreograph shows, its sorting. My stage guys, set up, media, music, makeup etc etc but I love every bit of it.

Which are your favorite Indian and international designers and why?
Manish Arora and Nikhil & Shantanu, I just love the way they style me up.

Tell us something about your early life.
I entered modeling while I was in college. I participated in Miss India and ended up among the finalists. It stoked my career to the levels that I did Revlon with Cindy Crawford to become the first Indian ever to model for the brand.

What future goals have you set for yourself?
I believe in destiny. I take life as it comes.

What’s your opinion on increasing number of fashion weeks in India?
Its ridiculous. If it’s too confusing for people like me who is very much a part of the industry, imagine the buyers then.

How and why did you pick up modeling as a career?
Modeling just happened to me. I enjoyed it so I made it my profession. And now I am running a grooming academy for past 10 years.

What’s you take on young models getting engaged in substance abuse and suicides?
The reasons like insecurity, wrong company and being away from family contribute to such activities. Not only modeling, Its happening everywhere unfortunately.
