Though there are few words to describe the ancient delicacy and craft of couture, the modern atelier houses; Valentino, Chanel, Elie Saab, Armani Privé, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Givenchy, have left us all in an optical daze lush with color, depth and most of all, sensuality.  The 2010 Fall Couture shows, graced by such industry renowned names as Carine Roitfeld of Paris Vogue, Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour of Vogue, Michael Roberts of Vanity Fair, and Cathy Horyn of The New York Times, had the best seats in the house as the 2010 couture season began.

Valentino helped us to remember the girl inside of us with ivory crepe, bow appliqués, lace, and baby doll ruffles.  On the other hand, Chanel appealed to our more sensible side with plush velvet, crystal-trimming, its signature tweed, and heavy coats fit for the coldest of Parisian days.  Elie Saab, following in a lighter footstep, gathered his inspiration from La Fenice, Venice’s most famed opera house, awing us with the deepest of red velvet, delicate sequin detailing, and asymmetric draping.  Armani Privé, tempting the most classic of senses, took us to a place of neutral color palettes, modest cuts, and simple detailing in the form of glistening earrings and wooden brooches.  Christian Dior showcased a collection with a level of vibrancy, grandiosity, and proportion that took our breath away.  With oversized headpieces mimicking floral plastic wrap and mammoth hand-painted pansies and parrot tulips dancing down the runway, one must have felt like Alice falling into the most spectacular wonderland imaginable.  Jean Paul Gaultier brought us back down to earth with his signature trench coats, feathery cashmere, fishnet tights, and bright red lipstick perfect for any lover of Old Hollywood.  And last, but certainly not least, was Givenchy; ornamental, romantic, and ceaselessly memorable.  Chantilly lace, appliqués, and clusters of beads and Swarovski crystals took their home in individual salons where each garment was placed.  No matter what color you dream in this season, after laying eyes on these collections, you’ll dream in couture.
