The Ballerina Project, a bold and unforgettable look at all that makes ballet, and more importantlyballerinas, beautiful, has compiled a series of photographs over the past month in the hopes of creating an online art gallery for all to marvel at.  From the graffiti ridden streets of New York City, the photographs give its audience a rare look at an unlikely meeting:  refinement with roughness, poise with decay, magnetism with disgust.  Dane, the mastermind behind the Ballerina Project, has taken us to the East Village, Battery Park, Washington Heights, the East River, Williamsburg (Brooklyn), 14th Street F & V, Soho, Queens, Redhook and Wall Street in New York City to capture scenes with eight exquisite dancers:  Alex, Violeta, Amelia, Kate, Brittany, Simone, Christie and Betheny.  Balancing on subway platforms and cobblestone walkways, hanging from stoplight posts and refrigerator doors, kneeling atop decrepit cement steps and soiled sidewalks, the subjects represent both strength and delicacy in these most everyday of settings.

The Project, that was regarded as “A worthy blog and fabulous art project,” by the Huffington Post on August 2nd, has left the nostalgic dancer reaching for their ballet shoes, the aspiring photographer venturing to more daring spots, and the avid art-goer seeking magnificence in the most unassuming of places.  Followers of the Ballerina Project are anxiously awaiting Dane’s next creations, which will no doubt inspire us to look deeper, stare longer, and see more.
