Betsey Johnson Goes BankruptThe 69-year old American fashion designer, Betsey Johnson, known as much for her cartwheeling as for her eccentric pink designs has filed for bankruptcy owing to rising debts.

The filing will see the closure of most of the brand’s 63 stores worldwide, expectedly making hundreds of employees lose their jobs. However, the designer will continue to be the creative director of her namesake label, and will design sportswear for the brand.

Steve Madden Ltd, which owns the intellectual property rights of the Betsey Johnson brand, will keep the four or five flagship stores of the brand in New York and other cities. On the other hand, the sale of Betsey Johnson clothing at luxury boutiques like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales will still continue to be sold but the focus in the near future will be on moderate pricing.

The company will be auctioned on May 8, 2012 and soon the stores will be shut down.
