It’s My Time campaign by the United Colors of Benetton offers young people around the world a means of sharing their opinion,as well as a place to be noticed and a dream to aspire to. This worldwide communication campaign is the first global online casting session running from 8 February to 16 March 2010 and will choose faces from around the world for United Colors of Benetton’s next product campaign.

Young people are invited to attend a global casting session and illustrate their style and personality – the things that make them unique – through videos and photographs, which can be uploaded at will and free of charge at benetton.com/casting, through a special YouTube page.

The young people taking part in Benetton’s global casting session will be voted by the web community. The 100 finalists will then be evaluated by a specially-formed jury of experts, who will choose 20 finalists to fly to New York and feature in  United Colors of Benetton’s advertising campaign for autumn-winter 2010/2011, under the lens and creative guidance of British photographer Josh Olins.

He would particularly describe himself as an extrovert, guy-next-door with no hang ups in life. Taking life as it comes; he is a guy with a completely carefree attitude. He governs his life with one single rule “live, let live, hope for the best but, be ready for the worst!”

He has been on the fashion scene for over six years now and has walked the ramp for almost every Indian designer. He was the official model for the Delhi fashion Week 2004 and then for three consecutive fashion weeks over the next few years. He has been rather busy over the past months shooting for a reality based game show on star network called Godrej Khelo Jeeto Jiyo which he was co hosting with Soha Ali Khan and then shooting a print campaign and a television commercial for Blackberry mobiles.

He is essentially based in Delhi but keeps shuffling between the capital and Mumbai. Meet Nikhil Sabharwal, the happy go lucky guy.

Family and Academics…
Coming from an army background I have always found each place to be my home town since I really never got to stay in a place for more than 3 years at a stretch. I did my schooling from all the cities possible ranging from Hyderabad to Pune to Delhi to Chandigarh. I did finish my graduation in engineering from Amity and then went on to become a pilot in Manila, Philippines.

Parent’s reaction to your choice of modeling as a career…
When elite offered me the contract, my dad was the one who instigated me to join it and mom agreed cent percent, so but obvious they were elated for me and my career.

First modeling assignment…
My first assignment was a fashion show for Sidhartha Tytler in 2003

Greatest achievement till date…
I’m not the one who categories things as big and small. There have been a list of achievements that have happened and each one has held utmost importance in my life.

Idea of an ideal date
An ideal date would be a pretty clichéd idea: some wine, moonlight on the beach and a pretty lady. Or maybe something like vodka, a moonlit night, a mountainous setting and another pretty lady.

When not modeling what are you most likely to be found doing…
Usually two of my favorite things I do whilst I’m not modeling are eating and travelling the country and beyond.

Five essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…

  • Confidence
  • Attitude
  • Charisma
  • Personal Style
  • Networking

Views on Indian vs. Western models…
Western models are the true epitome of being a model right from their physique to their approach towards work. That sure doesn’t mean Indian models aren’t up to the mark but a scope of improvement always exists.

Most touching moment of your life…
There has been more than one occasion in my life which has been highly emotional and has left a deep impact on me.

YOUR GREATEST FEAR: the idea of not having what I have right now!

YOUR PIECE OF ADVICE FOR UPCOMING MODELS: Be who you are and never forget where you came from. One should always have his feet stuck to mother earth no matter how big one becomes in life.

The annual “Fashion Spectrum”, 2010, began with an exhilarating marathon yesterday in Hauz Khas, New Delhi. Throughout the day, one enjoys “uth” challenges, a play by Antraal, a spectacular fashion show, and much more. Hosted by one of the premier fashion institutes of Delhi, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), the Spectrum is an extraordinary celebration.  The college is made of seven departments: Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Leather Design, Knitwear Design, Accessory Design, Fashion Technology, and Textile Design. Each year, the students of the various departments pool together their skills and resources to put on a remarkable show, on and off the ramp.

The interesting events throughout the day are open to guests, students, and faculty alike; there are many spots in NIFT at which these take place. The calendar, designed by the Fashion Communication department, defines the universal theme for the festival as well as where and when the performances and contests will be taking place. The calendar is in tandem with the inventive decorations around, made by students in the foundation program. This year’s keynote was “pratibimb” [reflection]; it means to honor and recognize the “you within”. A few of the contests yesterday, such as the plays, revolved around this very idea. More of these are bound to come in today’s busier itinerary, available at the NIFT website (www.nift.ac.in).

The students of the five design departments make their own creations for the fashion show, arguably the most distinct event of this annual bash. There are about two hundred models that parade down the ramp wearing the designers’ first ‘real’ creations, each one distinguishable and laudable. There are many themes spread throughout the show. Whether the thread is tribal or love, space or ‘Armageddon’, the crowd always looks forward to seeing how the young designers are inspired.

The seven departments put up rather large ‘posters’ around the “kund” (center) of the college, announcing their specific themes a week before the show: “Bling”, “Armageddon”, “Provocateur”, and more. They are each well defined, leaving behind just enough mystery to make the viewers wonder about what exactly the students are preparing.

And wonder they do. The model may be in an elegant skin-fit dress and a sweeping robe with tasteful feathers along the neckline; she may be wearing a dress you can imagine wearing to the red carpet; or she may be even be wearing a non-wearable, but spectacular, skirt constructed of wires, film tape, and cardboard. There will always be magnificent headdresses and accessories or accents; an ensemble or two will always look like a ball gown from the 1800s sent here in a time machine. One never knows what to expect; the most wearable clothes to the costume dresses and then the wearable art – the garments on stage run the gamut, and each of them is an exceptional piece of design.

The routine changed this year with the performance put on by the Fashion Communication Department, sponsored by Fashion Fad (www.fashionfad.in), at the opening of the fashion show. This production was in tribute to Top British fashion designer, the late “Lee” Alexander McQueen. The show began with an audio-visual presentation, fitting for the designer, leaving most of the audience in awe. The students took inspiration from three of McQueen’s most famous shows, including the 2007 RTW show based on the Salem Witch trials as well as 1999’s Weird Science. The “eulogy to the dark romance” was made in a distinctive, professional manner; it was an exemplary initiative, recognizing and paying homage to the man who has influenced so many others.

A success, the Fashion Spectrum at the National Institute has come a long way. The fun continues today, February 24, 2010, if you find yourself in that neighborhood. There is going to be singing, dancing, headgear making, a rock show competition, and even a prom night. So stay tuned!

The French Connection man steps in to SS10 with two diverse collections.  French Connection’s mainline collection provides sophisticated fashion-forward looks with quality fabrics, unique detailing and signature design twists where as denim-led street wear apparel for a casual look, focusing on individuality and embracing unconventional style.

The French Connection main collection starts off the season with precision in military detailing on longer length leather as well as classic four pocket jackets.  Pockets dominate – unusually placed on checked shirts, utility style on camouflage shorts, kangaroo pockets on loose fit denims – team any of these with a khaki loose waffle knit, ribbed dark dye denim or simple cotton jacket.

Salmon pinks, greys and creams carry through in to high summer, livened up with bright contrast linings and trims.  Sporty clean line track tops provide a grown up stylish approach to sportswear, while even the humble tee is not overlooked – polo shirts have no shoulder seams, while thin loose melange tees have elasticated hems, and even plain shirts feature embroidered tipping detail.

FCUK paints an inspiring picture in its introductory range ‘The Artist’ – paint splattered loose fit clothing jumps straight out of an artisan’s studio and in to your wardrobe.  A washed out, over-worn feel in a soft palette of pastels, dijon, blue, and grey is key to capturing the care-free spirit of the artist.  Mixing and matching texture adds an eclectic creative edge and evokes a rebellious streak – leather and canvas mix on jackets, while chambray and poplin shirts sit side by side with waxy feel work coats and luxurious angora mix jumpers.

When summer’s in full swing and you want to make a bold style statement, don’t just say it, spray it.  Colourful tees feature 80’s style graffiti bubble writing in neon shades evoking hot summer days on Brooklyn streets, while the trail of graffiti lingers on purple paint splattered jeans.  For the more reserved, neon flashes liven up the lining of a classic bomber or appear as top stitching on a check shirt.  Checks are large, sleeves are short, all look great with a range of five pocket jeans in varying fits and authentic washes to complete the laid back look.  The new night-crawler fit jean is the freshest summer shape with a longer crotch and narrow peg leg.

Hats hail in all shapes with the introduction of a duckbell cap, and the staple summer trilby re-worked in coloured straw, Prince of Wales check, and neutral canvas – all with contrast colour ribbon trim.  Cotton scarves are adorned with monochrome stripes or vivid colour checks, while alternative neckwear comes in the form of fun ties – choose from preppy stripes, bright spots, chintzy paisley or ditsy florals.  Bag it up in a leather satchel, retro plastic messenger, or a variety of canvas bags – the biggest and best of them being an oversize barrel duffle bag – perfect to pack up your summer wardrobe in and head off in to the sun…

This Spring Summer 2010, Marc by Marc Jacobs introduces the Leola Bag. It is the style pack in a brand new exclusive line called the flash group. And the flashes of eclectic colour are an undeniable vogue statement.

The wondrously crafted bags are made of beautiful shrunken lambskin leather from Italy and the Flash Leola is characterized by its special soft feel and crinkly texture. Signature elements of the Flash Group are graphic zippers that not only add the visual appeal but are also highly functional and can be zipped or unzipped for looser or more structured silhouettes.

The Flash group includes the Kelsey bag with a convertible shoulder strap; this bag may be worn across the body or as a shoulder bag. The sling doodle, a long shaped shoulder bag and a Little Kelsey complete the Flash Group. All styles share a wearable, cool, urban feel.
