Born in the summer heat of July, in Delhi, he has plans of reaching his lifelong dream “Milan”.

A known face, Amit has walked the ramp for every Indian designer for over the past three years.

He did his grads in Hindi Honors from Delhi University and since then has become an esteemed and inseparable member of the fashion scene. His long tresses make him ideal for a lot of designers wanting to experiment with looks. Over the years his list of designers has grown to include everyone from Manish Malhotra, Rocky S, Sabyasachi, Raghavendra Rathod, Rohit Bal and many others.

His most recent assignment was a show in Bangkok with Pepsi Max where he was part of a performance dressed up as a character from Avatar.

Family and Academics…

I come from Delhi. However I did my schooling from Patna then came to Delhi to do my grads from Delhi University.

Parent’s reaction to your choice of modeling as a career…

My parents did not quiet accept my choice of career. However as I rose and achieved success they slowly settled with this idea of modeling. Now they are really happy for me.

First modeling assignment…

My first assignment was with Jatin Kochhar for his catalog shoot. And the recent shoot with Rohit Chawla for his yearly calendar which was themed on Gustav Klimt’s paintings.

Greatest achievement till date…

I am the kind of person who does not rank his achievements. I’m delighted by all my triumphs and all my achievements but I’m not satisfied with any. I believe that the day a person is satisfied with his work he stops trying and that is the day he stops moving forward.

Idea of an ideal date

Well technically my ideal date has already happened, some time ago in Bangkok. However if I use my imagination, I think somewhere on a beach, with a bath tub, flowers all around, some red wine, in the moon light, with my partner would qualify as an ideal date.

When not modeling what are you most likely to be found doing…
I’m a great fan of reading and swimming. I have to go swimming at least a couple of times a month. Gyming is also an important part of my daily routine. In my spare time I will probably be found reading or watching movies. Some of my all time favorites are Sholay, Aangoor, Godfather, Dil Chahta Hai and recently 3 Idiots.

Five essentials for a model to climb the ladder of success…
. Hardwork
. Determination
. Ambition
. Right attitude and looks
. Luck

Views on Indian vs. Western models…

I’ll say that western models maintain better looks and are fitter than Indian models. However I’ll say that the Indian industry is grooming. Earlier men’s fashion was taken seriously but now we have our own Men’s Fashion Week which shows the globalization in our industry and along with this, Indian models are bound to groom themselves better.

The most touching moment of your life…

I’ll say that the most touching moment of my life was when I realized that modeling was the career that I wanted to follow and then I also stood by my decision. I stuck to it even though people did not agree with my choice.

Quick snippets:

FAVORITE FOOD:  My favorite is Indian Cuisine, especially chicken. Also I’m a good chef when it comes to Indian Cuisine.

FAVORITE PERFUME: Emporio Armani

FAVORITE DESIGNER: Karl Lagerfeld and Rohit Bal

FAVORITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION: San Francisco

FAVOURITE MUSIC: Well it depends on my mood. I like listening to jazz, sometimes even oldies like Kishore Kumar.

YOUR GREATEST FEAR: There is nothing that I can think of.

YOUR ADVICE FOR THE UPCOMING MODELS: Pursue your dream and work hard. Never look back, stand by your decision if you start out on this line. Most of all, believe in yourself.

The necessary pieces of jewellery that have transcended to menswear are the retro ties, pocket squares as I already said, a pair of cool shades, hats and caps, sometimes suspenders. Now for the ultra elegance, men should add a few sexy pairs of cufflinks, which stand for a style and subtle sense of awareness that I know what I am wearing unlike the watches which scream of being expensive. The other day I noticed a pair of fun cufflinks from Tie Rack that had a miniature bike on it…ooooh and yet another range of wedding cufflinks with engraving that said, bride’s father, groom etc. The right pair of shoes to match your look is a must but I am sure men know it better and would like the women to advise them on it. What really confuses them is how to match the new age colour sparked, abstract motif ties with the right shade. In this case, note the prominent colors of your shirt and then choose a tie with accents colour of your shirt. To combine a checked shirt with a differently checked tie, wear smaller checked prints on your body and larger checks around your neck.

Shifting our focus to the latest scarves, which when tied with aplomb adds style and warmth to your winter wardrobe. And with a little variation in the way you tie the knot you attain the HOT look. Check this out for yourself, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq5dlc7t8k8.
To dress the funky and punk men inspired by the hip-hop culture is far more interesting than choosing diamond jewelry. The looks commences with double excel tees, a lot bling with bling-bling in large chunky neck pieces that usually hang down till the waists with pendants of skull, claws, marijuana motifs etc. And yes the street fight weapon like the fist claw also becomes an inevitable part of their accessory section.

And last but not the least as per our cultural influences men in India have always dressed in colourful turbans, huge gold studs of the Rajputs, straw hats of Assam, batik print lungis of Bengal etc. also mentioning the rajas and maharajas who were literally loaded with all the jewellery that they use to wear. Hence we have all the more reason to celebrate accessories for men. Posted by : Matsya at 02:45 AM

Sujal Shah, Head of Fashion, IMG, India, shares his views and responsibilities on holding the reins of the Indian Fashion Industry. Before engaging with LFW he was the Head of Strategy and Planning at Brand Marketing India where he enhanced business development through innovative partnerships across international brands such as Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Bottega Venetta, Calvin Klein, French Connection and Tommy Hilfiger. Besides consulting for various fields he focused on Luxury brands and the HNI’s in the US and India. Last season, Sujal served as the Senior Advisor to IMG for LFW Spring/ Summer 2010 before taking full time employment as Head of Fashion for IMG, India recently.

What are the responsibilities that you hold as the Head Fashion IMG?
In the global perspective, India is an emerging and high potential country for IMG, its businesses and core competencies. In my role with IMG, a large part is devoted to the continued excellence in executing Lakme Fashion Week, which is jointly promoted by Lakme and IMG. Additionally, I am charged with looking for new opportunities to engage our expertise via new and innovative platforms or partnerships.

In my role with IMG, I also support the overall business beyond fashion in terms of new project evaluation and business development.

What are the changes or new proposals that you would put forward for the LFW?
LFW, as with any eminent property, requires continued enhancement and innovation to be in tune with the needs of the environment and maintain its position as a market leader. As we enter our second decade, we have introduced concepts such as Resort and alignment of seasons with the domestic buying cycle. As we move forward we will continue to look for ways to add value to our key stakeholders of designers, buyers, media, and sponsors.

Please elaborate on the decision of showcasing the current season on LFW ramp?
Lakmé Fashion Week consistently encourages the business of Indian fashion through various strategic and innovative endeavors. It is important to recognize the evolution of the Indian fashion industry and address the requirements of domestic buyers and designers head on. Reviewing the current scenario and the need of the hour, the upcoming Lakmé Fashion Week decided to commence a month prior than previous seasons and focus on the current/upcoming season.

Unlike the international market, in India fashion retailers are requesting delivery within 60 days, shortening the production cycle. LFW’s strategic change reflects the Indian market’s ability and desire to respond quickly and service its customers closely to the season and allows designers to take their merchandise to their customers immediately after the show from the ramp to the rack.

What steps would you take to ensure an increase in the buyers list?
While an increase in buyers is a plus for our event and designers, the key is to continuously improve the quality of buyers coming to the event. Perhaps even more important is the need to look for new and more ways to facilitate the dialogue and interactions between designers and buyers. Over several seasons we will implement a long term strategy aimed at improving the designer – buyer relationships and ultimately, business.

LFW has always been associated as Bollywood Fashion, has this image worked for or against the fashion week?
Lakme Fashion Week is a trade event and is about promoting talent and creating business opportunities for designers. In the recent past, designers have been noticed and have had an opportunity to design for films through this platform; today their work has given them visibility in the film fraternity and supported their business growth. We are happy that these designers are able to leverage every bit from the platform.

What are the short listing criteria for new and upcoming designers?
Each season, LFW receives applications for GenNext and Emerging designers from all over India. We consistently focus on quality and not at increasing just the numbers. A panel of jury judges the applicants work on quality, innovation, creativity, marketability and commercial viability.

Why Suneet Varma as the Grand Finale designer?
To this Mr.N. Rajaram, Vice President, Lakmé adds “Suneet is one of the most sought after designers and a name to reckon with in the fashion industry. He represents the perfect blend of Summer Resort and a flair for business of fashion, clearly being the best choice for the Lakmé Grand finale.”

Any other established designer who has shifted base with LFW this time?
Designers participate in Lakmé Fashion Week because they want to showcase their work to a larger audience, increase business and reach out to the global market. LFW welcomes everyone who meets the participating criteria and will continue to do the same.

How is the future of fashion in India and how do you plan to take it forward?
From and LFW perspective, as a pioneer, innovator and leader in promoting the business of fashion in India, Lakme Fashion Week will look forward to different avenues of redefining the future of fashion. One such example is our introduction of a formal Resort platform for Indian designers. Resort has been a well defined season internationally for years. Indian designers have a natural proclivity to Resort given the climate and the fabrics in India. Recognizing the immense talent in the country, LFW has committed to offering a yearly Summer/Resort event which serves as a powerful platform to increase the exposure of Indian designers to the international markets. LFW’s focus on this style in the coming season and years will now put India on the global map and act as a catalyst to attract more international buyers.

In my broader IMG Fashion role, I have the opportunity to explore new, innovative platforms and commercial relationships. To the mass markets, fashion has an aspirational appeal. I think there will be interesting ways to take fashion directly to this segment.
Blanca Dixit Peralta uses multi layers of acrylic and oil on canvas to create figures that are real yet abstract ordinary and yet surreal, an experience enough to ignite a passion that is beyond one’s causal existence. The stunningly glamorous artist who heirs her beauty from her Indian mother and Spanish father is a trained dancer in Salsa, Tango, Jazz and Flamingo as well.

Tell us something about your schooling and how did you pick up painting?
I have done my schooling from the British School, New Delhi and then I earned a scholarship to hone my skills in fine arts and went to Boston. Art was something that has been bestowed upon me and has running in my genes as my father is a sculptor and my mother has been painting for the past fifteen years. I have been painting professionally since 2004 and now it’s been six years.

What do you do other than paintings?
I read, collect art movies, art books and yes travel a lot. I also love photography and graphic designing so sometimes they act in freshening up my mood. As of now I designed posters, invitation cards but only for friends it’s so much fun as we sit together, discuss, brainstorm, sketch and exchange ideas and experiences.

Who is your style, inspiration and muse for your art?
My art is very figurative, real, and abstract with a bit of surreal touch to it. I paint the reality through body form but it slightly slips beyond the ordinary space. My work is a lot inspired by the great old masters like Da Vinci, Salvador Dali and Michael Angelo.

How do you plan your future?
I don’t plan much ahead in time and live life by how it comes. Now I am working for my upcoming exhibition in March which will be at the Indian Habitat Centre. The work is realistic and figurative in accordance with my style and takes the viewer into a different dimension and an absolutely new culture. I have a few more ideas that I will be working on subsequently after these exhibition. First would be works of art which is relative to my cultural responses, the next is based on my personal responses as an artist to the issues and causes in India.

How was the experience of shooting with Rohit Chawla?
Rohit Chawla has been our family friend and has known my parents from the past 25 years so he has practically seen me growing up. So when he called me I jumped at the idea, since I am a painter myself I was very excited over this entire affair. Originally I had posed for two shots in the calendar but finally only one was picked up. But I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of modeling.

With a Personality and style like yours you can easily be mistaken for a model, would you like to become a model as well?
Actually modeling is not something new for me, I first modeled for a Godrej advert when I was 6 years old, then again at 12 for Hero cycles and yet again for vintage sunglasses. But somehow I was never very comfortable in front of the camera so never took up modeling as a career option.

Have you ever given fashion or designing a thought?
Talking in true sense I love designing clothes, I have tailor at home and I m constantly creating something or the other new for my wardrobe. Designing is something at the back of my mind and I will start taking it seriously in future though at this moment its only painting.

Who is your favourite designer?
I love Manish Arora because of his bold use of colours and full of life design, I find his creations very close to my sensibility, Tarun Tahiliani for his sophisticated elegant feminine dressing and Gauri & Nainika as their designs are a must have for every woman’s wardrobe. And among international brand I of course love Gucci, Prada and Issey Miyake.

How do you take challenges and creativity blocks in your life?
I just pack my bags and go out even if for two days I drive to some mountains and I am fresh again. At times Delhi becomes very monotonous and a break is most required then I just call up my mom and tell her that I am leaving.

What sort of music do you enjoy listening to?
I enjoy every jounre of music be it jazz, Trans, ambient, classical depending on my mood. Music always lifts up my spirit and it is the rhythm of life.

Being an artist your expression must be exposed to all sorts of philosophical thoughts and Imagery, do you have special associations with any particular social cause?
I am constantly working with a lot of NGO’s in aid of the mal nourished kids, kids suffering from AIDS and thousands of homeless children.

What is your greatest strength and greatest fear in life?
I take things as they come and learn from my past experiences so that I do not repeat the same mistakes again in life. I am also very aware of my surroundings. And my greatest fear is losing my loved ones, I am so scared of the thought that I don’t even think about it.
